  • security code for rcd 510?

    Hi guys,

Just wanting to know whether the RCD510 (5K0 035 190)requires a security code if I unplugged it to install bluetooth.

Dealer said it's not on the VWdatabase, and I need to give them the car for a day or two for them to retrieve it?

Quite frankly, one would think if you called the dealership where you got the car from they'd have your information on hand? They didn't bother to give me the code when I got the vehicle.

I've read on some other forums, the ECU is able to tell whether the radio is new or same if you've unplugged it, and it'll eventually exit the safe mode? Sounds too good to be true if that's the case.

    Any insights welcome.

The PIN only needs to be entered if the RCD510 is installed into a new vehicle.

If it is unplugged/battery goes flat no need to re-enter the PIN.

Definitely doesn't take more than a day. Had my car serviced recently and told the bloke to get me my RCD510 code as well, which they didn't charge extra for (which I didn't think they would anyway). This was at a different dealership to where it was purchased.

I'd be very curious why it's not on the DB..

Which dealership did you go to? My car was purchased from South Yarra VW - wouldn't recommend their attitude on customer service.

VW Camberwell. Obviously not everyone is going to have the same experience, but they seemed to be pretty good from my dealings with them.

              security code for rcd 510?

Totally off topic with regards to dealer info and service.
But the info from camberwell VW suggests they have clowns working there!!! Mk4 units may take a couple of days max but anything else should only take no more than 1 hour if you take the car in with proper I'd to obtain a pin.

No need for the car to go to the dealer at all. All you need to give them is the serial number of the RCD 510 I have a contact in Melbourne that has supplied me with the PIN number after I bought a unit off an eBay seller in Canberra when the local dealer refused to give him the pin even when he took the car to the dealer and I live in QLD. It just shows you how incompetent some of the techies are at these dealerships

Hi. I have exactly the same problem (require PIN) after battery disconnected for about a week while ECU out trying to be tuned. Rang dealer I go to for servicing (not where I bought it) and he said there is no record of code in VW system. Bit slack of VWA I must say He said the only way they can do it is take unit out to get serial number and then contact VW for code. Does this seem right? Am going to try dealer I bought it off Monday, in case they may have it, otherwise looks like I have no other option?!

At the dealership I worked at, we used to write the serial number and code down on the jobcard for the pre-delivery inspection. A bit of a failsafe method if the VW servers were down (usually a once or twice a month event).

Dealerships will not always put the code into their database. They don't have to, when you can supply them the serial number (starts with VWZ), and your VIN. If you've got one, you can pull the serial number out with VAG-Com, or VCDS, or VAS-PC too.

All of this info is useless, if you've got a VW that is not equipped with an RNS or RCD radio. Anything with a Eurovox, usally MK4 Golf, B5 Passat, etc, but this still requires the VIN and the serial number, and the dealership will email this off to Volkswagen's Warranty department to chase up. At their leisure, of course.

Pity more dealers aren't that organised Unfortunately, as I don't have VCDS, it looks like I've got no choice but to pay dealer to get serial number and chase code. Thanks anyway.

Hi. May be able to to borrow a VCDS cable, and was wondering if anyone can tell me how to find serial number, given that I haven't used VCDS before and am in the middle of moving so don't have a lot of time
It is RCD510 btw (as originally fitted).
                          Cheers.

With a RCD510, it should just be Module 56 - Radio:

As you can see with this example on a full AutoScan, it's not hard to spot.
