  • Upgrade RCD-300 to RCD-310

I have in my VW Golf Mk5 TDI '06 RCD-300 and recently bought RCD-310.
Is it plug-n-play or do I need to do some upgrade (canbus...)?
    Thanks guys

    Hey mate,

I've done an upgrade for someone with an 05 TDI going to a RCD510 and from what I can tell you need the new gateway, but you could always give it a shot first and see if you have batt issues?

You'll also need an antenna adapter cable.

    Good info here...

      OK
      Thanks so much for info.
I think I will sell RCD 310 and keep RCD 300 and maybe just upgrade to RCD 300 mp3 version.

Hi, does your RCD310 have security coding?

And is it the model able to have aux input, bluetooth media streaming etc?

You could also upgrade to RCD510 with 6CD and SD card slot for just a little bit more.

To find out if you need to upgrade the canbus, you need the VCDS scan of your car
and then look in this thread http://www.vwwatercooled.com/forums/...all-75217.html if yours could be upgraded, needs to be replaced or is OK to use.

If you want to scan your car and find out whether you need to upgrade, PM me. Almost certain that you would.
The physical upgrade itself is not that hard, but the coding of the gateway can cause issues. Jimmy said mine took a bit longer because it thought it was a LHD German Audi Diesel.
If you are confident (having read the gateway upgrade procedure on My-GTi) then you can borrow the VCDS cable for coding

Mine's a late 07, MY08 with full screen MFD and RCD300 MP3 (but no aux input). I gather this means it will have the newer gateway. If my gateway needs to be changed I might not bother with it at all as it really isn't that important to me.

I like the look of the RCD510 but I think it is a touch excessive for what I want (I'd really just be happy with just an Aux in cable).

                Thanks for the offer 99_FGT.

Woo, checked the bus gateway the old fashioned way by pulling apart the dash.

turns out my September 07 build MY08 (full height MFD) has the L revision gateway. yay.

...and now the real test. Fit the RCD510 and see if it the battery doesn't go flat.

                      Cheers

I've heard overnight, but I think thats with the RNS510, which is more power hungry than the others.

Be also aware that even though you have battery drain, the radio might turn itself off when the battery charge is low, thus you might just get an almost discharged battery.

Well the RCD310 is now installed in my MK5 and I'll be monitoring it overnight to see how the battery voltage goes.

I confirmed that the unit had the same standby current draw as the RCD500 but I figured the real test would be to leave it over night.
