Hey Transporter that makes for a great comparison.
Mine is the (cheap) unit manufactured in China, connected up to a RCD510. Picture tends to warp at the edges. Lines are static but are a good guide if you're going straight back (i.e. they don't bend to show you where you're going to end up if you're turning).
The one in your photo is the higher end RVC+ with dynamic lines, connected up to an RNS510. Green box is the static line and yellow is the dynamic lines which take into account the angle of your front wheels. Lens is better quality/flat and doesn't look like you're looking out a fishbowl.
Yes, definitely the price difference in the picture quiality is not worth the extra $ to spend. The both pictures were taken with the phone cameras in almost identical light onditions.
I can only say that RVC+ has no better image quality than std RVC.
My wife and I compared the reverse cameras on her Alpine CCD one with my Tiguan's factory RVC+ before. The Alpine one showed more details at night and in the day, it appeared less bleached/washed out.
So I guess the VW one isn't as high spec as the after market Alpine (tho I understand Alpine makes a lot of OEM reverse camera stuff including the ones in the X5).
Thanks for all the feedback. It's clear that the RCV Plus that I ordered should have the dynamic guidelines. It's even in the latest Tiguan brochure (page 33).
They dealer has been pretty good to me so far, so I will point this out politely and for now assume an honest mistake has been made.
There are 2 levels of RVC - basic with just camera and then one with camera + guidance lines. The system that has the guidance lines comes with a separate controller which adds the lines into the picture. If you don't have this box all you get is a camera connected up to your RNS510 which I don't believe has any smarts to add the guidance lines to the picture.
As you can see one system is twice the price of the other. So it looks like the dealer has put in the cheaper system. If I had paid full price I wouldn't be happy and I'd ask them to put the upgraded system in if that's what you'd paid for.
2011 Passat going in to get the RCV replaced as the camera stopped working. How can i confirm that my car has the dynamic reverse guideline controller before the dealer install the new RVC?

The dealer where I bought the car from disabled the RVC because it was faulty (not going back to them), so I have never seen it actually working, a forum member activated it a few weeks ago and showed me the camera pop out when we out it in reverse gear which never happened before so I never knew there was a RVC in it. The screen simply displayed OPS and no video area prior to activating the camera.
Took the car in at Denlo, they said the camera itself is faulty. They have apparently ordered a new one from Germany because the "$1100 part is to expensive to keep in the spare parts room".
PS. they disabled the camera before handing over the car, it was an ex-demo and i never knew it had an RVC..

Take it to a good independent VW workshop in your area if you're paying for the repair. You could save the time and money.
The module should be above the rear dr. side wheel arch and is visible if you remove the little door in the trim and look up, you should see the box approx. 150mm x 150mm there.
There is no access door for anything behind the boot lining. I have uploaded pics at the links below, not sure if they work though.
I don't really want to remove the whole boot lining because it is really tightly sealed behind the rubber seals
