  • Reverse camera guide lines

    Hi guys,

Picked up my new Tiguan yesterday, 132 TSi, 18" inch alloys with leather and RNS510 with reverse camera.

All is good, except for the reverse camera. It doesn't show the reversing guidelines (green and yellow), which to me doesn't seem correct. It should show some lines (preferably they should move when I steer), as is also shown in the manual.

I've called the dealer today, and was told that the new Tiguans don't have those lines anymore... It don't really belief this, as in my eyes all reversing cameras should have these lines. To be honest, without the lines the camera isn't that useful as its difficult to judge the distances...

I was hoping if any of you guys have any experience with this or could give me some advice?

I was reading through some forums and got the impression that the lines could be turned on and off, but also the dealer or professional installer could do this. I saw a few of you guys installed their own camera so maybe one of you has experience with this?

    Your advice is much appreciated!

I recall the reverse cameras were out of stock previously and were not even part of the official options. Some dealers fitted this locally.

Even when I custom ordered mine, they could not include the RVC+ option in the ordering system but used a locally fitted option (in the order system) for the quote. I made sure they added the comment that it was factory fitted. Mine was built in late May so I guess earlier ones may be fitted locally.

My car was build two months ago, with delivery yesterday... Mine should have been factory fitted, and that's what the receipt/purchase order states...

My new Tiguan (I've had it almost 2 weeks) with RNS510 and camera has the lines. Far as I can tell the camera is factory fitted, when I selected the options I made sure none of them were dealer fit. 103TDI though, but I don't see that would make a difference.

There are 2 levels of RVC - basic with just camera and then one with camera + guidance lines. The system that has the guidance lines comes with a separate controller which adds the lines into the picture. If you don't have this box all you get is a camera connected up to your RNS510 which I don't believe has any smarts to add the guidance lines to the picture.

Check this seller out as he has both systems:

            RVC - with guidance lines

            RVC - camera only

As you can see one system is twice the price of the other. So it looks like the dealer has put in the cheaper system. If I had paid full price I wouldn't be happy and I'd ask them to put the upgraded system in if that's what you'd paid for.

Laugh all you like but if you have kids or pets and a high riding car like the Tiguan, it's sometimes better to be safe than sorry. There was this case of an Australian expat who backed her SUV or MPV into her kid in Singapore. Really heart wrenching stuff.

Yes best off with an RVC even if you don't get the guidance lines. But if you paid for guidance lines and didn't get them that's a different story.

You're absolutely right. The RVC is an important safety device as well as the reversing sensors. The best is not to bother to respond these kinds of posts.

I have fitted the RVC cameras to both our Tiguans. One with the lanes into 2012 TDI and as long as you have the RVC controller in the car, then the lines should be displayed (the controller factory location is above the right rear wheel arch and is when you remove the trim door in the booth and look above the wheel arch). If your dealer fitted it, maybe he didn't code it properly, or maybe/most likely he just fitted RVC without the moving lines (just STD RVC).

There's definately a place for reverse cameras and sensors in terms of safety and convenience, but I do believe people should draw the line sometimes as to the cars they get fitted to. Putting them on small hatchbacks is boarding on rediculous in my opinion, but that's just me. If the customer is happy to pay for it, and feels it's required, then so be it. But you should never completely rely on electronic aides when it comes to driving. This is where the salesman should remind you that these features are only to ASSIST you, not do the work for you.

Originally, they only ever offered RVC with the dynamic lines, which only worked if your steering angle sensor was basic set (You'd know if it wasn't, because there'd be an orangle light on the dash with a circular arrow with an exclamation mark (!) inside it). Spare a thought for those who paid for the lovely auto park function, and somehow ended up with a set of poorly-fitted parking sensors. That's a difficult issue to rectify, without transferring your name onto another set of rego papers...

I 100% agree, at least for now. However the future will change it and in some models the future is almost here or is here.

But, I think that for the legal reason, they will state for as long as they legaly can, that the driver is always responsible when the accidents happen.

Thanks for the responses guys. I had another look at my contract note from VW which clearly states "RNS510 with RVC Plus". To me, the "plus" indicates its not the basic version but should come with dynamic guidelines.

After some further research I found the following brochure on the Volkswagen site:

On page 2 it states clearly that RVC Plus comes with dynamic guidelines.

Conclusion: I've been ripped off, and will respond to the dealer on Monday.

If anybody has another view or tips on how to address this issue with the dealer, please let me know.

Will keep you guys posted on how I am going.

Thanks for all the responses and great forum!

I would just suggest that you don't start with the word ripped off. They could've made an honest mistake, ...someone didn't read the contract properly when placing your order or something like that.

In that link it does NOT include Tiguan in the models on which it is available

Possibly since it was printed they are included but be careful what you refer to.

Ask them nicely why the lines arent there when RVC Plus should have them.

Just finished installing my RVC this morning and it even has yellow lines (not dynamic ones though).

I bought it (group buy) from this seller:

VW Passat, Tiguan, Touran, Golf plus rear view camera kit for RNS510 RCD510 RNS315-in Parking Assistance from Automobiles & Motorcycles on Aliexpress.com

Agree with the comments about using mirrors. The RVC is good for seeing what is directly behind the car (kids, bikes, etc) but it doesn't show you if you're about to smack your side mirror on something.

I used it the first time this morning and actually found it a little distracting reversing out of the drive through a gate. Much better off checking the mirrors for distance/clearance than looking at the display.

It's a useful tool that should (if used properly) reduce accidents when reversing.
