Dealer has fitted a basic 9w2 unit. I don't think VWA sell the 9w7 units as a retro fit aftermarket option as they often have compatibilty issues as the radio is often older than the BT unit and the OS cannot read/support the latest BT protocol which results in garbled phone book names and numbers on your rns display

been reading through the thread and the rosstech guide (very helpful), thought I might just go ahead and ask in case someone knows it off the top of their head. I have the rcd500 but am sourcing a RCD510 as an upgrade. I have the parrot, ego bluetooth already in. What's the best bluetooth I can fit that will work with the older red mfd?

The newer units work in Red MFD cars, they just don't show up on the screen or work with the steering wheel. They just work on the headunit.

          Question.

My '09 R36 has a 9W2 bluetooth module installed (I'm assuming behind the headunit, as it was dealer installed).

Now, I'm looking at upgrading to a 9W7 bluetooth module since I want the extra functionality.

Now, is it just a straight module swap and VCDS update, or do I have to run another microphone lead/additional cables? Some of the initial thread posts were a bit ambiguous.

The plug on the unit will be the same, so you should be able to do a straight swap of the black boxes (if it is indeed a 9W2 and not some parrot jobby). But you may need to do some VCDS coding on the new 9W7.

Apparently the 9W2 has A2DP, it's the 9W3 that doesn't. This is important because the 9W3 was mono so if you swap a 9W3 for a 9W7 you'll only get sound out of the right speakers w/o running some new cable.

            Some good info here

Alright, fantastic. I was concerned that I'd have to start pulling apart more than just the centre facia to run new wiring.

              Much appreciated.

                Blue tooth

Hey guys, just a quick question, I am having issues with the bluetooth and im not sure if its normal (vw thinks it is...)

if i am listening to radio or a cd with my iphone bluetoothed to the car and a message/push notification/someone unlocks my phone, the head unit automatically switches to bluetooth music. How do I stop it as it drives me up the wall.

                Cheers

I would try another VW dealer.

My iPhone is constantly connected via Bluetooth, if that happened every time my phone tried to make noise, I would have sold the car by now.

You need to disable BT autoplay.
Can't remember where it is in the menu, go to setup and then media I think...

Quick question to those who have retrofitted a 9w7 bluetooth kit (mated to RNS510).

Did you need to unplug the main connector behind the RNS510 to fit the bluetooth wiring?

If yes, did you need to re-enter the security code to activate the RNS510?

I have one arriving this week and will be installing it probably this weekend in my Tiguan if it does not need the security code . Otherwise I have to get the code first from VW service

                        Q1 - Yes

Q2 - No, if your RNS510 came with the car from factory. Yes, If it was from ebay, audiupgrades, dealer etc.

                          Thx!

Just clarifying Q2.. bought the Tiguan used fr a Skoda dealer and it already has the RNS510 & RVC. BUT, can't really tell if it was factory optioned or dealer fitted one.. it has a RCD510 manual too

The GPS antenna is on left corner the dashboard instead of a sharkfin one. It's a prefacelift MY2011 model. Perhaps someone with a prefacelift RNS510 optioned Tiguan can confirm if it should have a sharkfin one if from factory?

You only need the code if you connect the RNS510 into a different car. I've disconnected my one (from eBay) plenty of times, have also had battery disconnected a few times, I only needed the code the first time I retrofitted it.

The GPS antenna would never be on the dash if it was done at factory, that's for sure!
