iPhone 5 and MDI

After my previous doom and gloom that the adapter wouldn't work - in response to a number of very pissed off customers, you might have noticed Apple delayed shipment of the adapter quite significantly. This delay I'm told was due to working on the adapter firmware having more support for 30-pin accessories to ease consumer pain. Happily, they worked in the VW MDI setup into it and it plays nicely with iPod-Out for VW. It also charges (500mA only, so no speedy recharges).

I received my adapter today and it works as if it would when you connect an iPhone 4/3/iPod. The only hiccup I notice so far is when you plug it in, there's a significant initialisation delay. I have nfi why this is, however, it's currently taking upwards of 10 seconds to get going.

Awesome news! Fantastic to hear that. Getting iPhone connection with iPod out is a big feature for me in deciding what car I'm going to buy.

I can confirm this too... after testing iphone 5 with lightning connector attached there is NO difference...or should say no problems.. I have not experienced ANY significant initialisation delay in fact I would say it starts faster than my old iphone 4. Not sure mythik why yours is behaving differently to mine.....

I got the Lightning to 30-pin Adapter (0.2 m), which is the one with the extension cable instead of being a straight adapter.

MDI on my mk6 Golf works perfectly with it.

I have been using the Lightning to 30-pin Adapter with my MDI, it works fine, but i notice it is extremely slow to charge my iPhone 5, Maybe it doesn't supply as much power as the new iphone needs to charge properly

DAC is in the lightning adapter.


The MDI works fine with the lightning adapter because it doesn't use the iPod Out function (unlike what some have been saying), so its fully compatible.

Thats how they can keep the lightning fully digital and still have it work with 30-pin docks (which have always been analogue - audio wise). It also means that Chinese copies will probably won't work with audio for a while.

I just bought the adapter cable (0.2m) this afternoon. It charges the iphone 5 without problems, but the head unit is unable to see any musics on the phone. I'll try to upgrade MDI's firmware and give it another try tomorrow. Other I'll return the adapter cable to Apple.

Just checking, are you using the lightning adapter cable with the iPod 30-pin MDI cable?

Mine works perfectly, but its just the adapter, not the longer 0.2m one you are using.

The adapter is too fat to fit my iPhone with case. Even the 0.2m adapter cable's lighting end is fatter than the cable comes with iPhone 5.

I got refund from Apple Store this afternoon. I tried to upgrade MDI's firmware, but it showed doesn't need to.
