Apple’s Lightning To 30-Pin Adaptor Doesn’t Support Video And iPod Out | Gizmodo Australia

Will this mean that MDI wont work with the new iPhone5?

  • #2
MDI will work for audio output + charging, but not for seamless control via RCD/RNS touchscreen interface anymore. You will need to select the song/album/playlist you want from the device itself.

"Apple has confirmed to Macworld that these adapters support analog and USB audio-out, as well as syncing and charging. However, the adapters don’t support video-out or iPod mode, the latter a special mode that lets particular accessories, such as car stereos and some whole-home-audio systems, display your iPod’s menus on the accessory’s own screen. More cryptically, the online Apple Store’s product pages note that “some 30-pin accessories are not supported.” - What Apple's new Lightning connector means for you | Macworld

Here's a video of what iPod-Out looks like: QNX iPod Out Video - this is the exact same as what VW have leveraged through the MDI adapter via the RCD/RNS units.

The solution? There is no solution. Apple have moved forward in the view that BT is the future connectivity method for vehicle audio (hence their inclusion of it on the iPod Nano), so are not concerned with vehicle integration in that way anymore.

    Let the crying begin.

I didn't even know you could control iPod through the RNS unless it was on the HDD. Is there something I need to do to get this to work?

Plug it in using the MDI iPod/iPhone cable then select MDI along the top sources tabs when using the media interface on the RNS. You can browse the structure like you would on the device by clicking on Selection.

The price of those docking adapters alone is the biggest joke I've seen. Probably costs them 50c each and I saw a screenshot showing one for sale for 30 GBP. I honestly won't be surprised the take-up rate is a lot lower this time 'round.

At least there's always bluetooth streaming

Actually it's similar to a Thunderbolt cable and there's some logic circuitry and not just a simple cable.

And shipping for those adaptors has dropped to 2 weeks due to demand. So I think your guess is wrong

very informative mythik, but does this mean that ipod out feature is not supported by iphone 5 or by the cable itself?

This article is a lot more detailed on what it can or cannot do

Lightning 30-pin adapter works with analog audio, "iPod Out" doesn't mean what you think it means | TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog

I'd be happy if I could select the tracks on the iPhone and just have the audio out to the RCD/RNS

I still use steering controls a lot such as next track pause ... I think splash screen that apple has "accessory connected" is becoming more and more obsolete and should be phased out. It takes longer to find the song you look for on the head unit ( s c r o l l ) than on the iphone itself........And with more and more streaming music apps such as spotify and rdio not having locked screen, really time to get rid of it.

The safest assumption would be that you would get the Play/Pause/Next/Prev controls and Track info with the adapter. The selection screen where you can select playlists and whatnot is in the maybe court for now I think.

The same controls are available over A2DP in the newer BT units, but the DACs in the BT units don't seem to be as good as the iPhone's.

The biggest issue that we have all overlooked with this is that from now on, if BT streaming is the way forward, cops are going to have a field day because you cannot (in Vic anyway) have any kind of mobile device in the passenger compartment available to touch or interact with while the car is in motion. You can't even have a phone or iPod sitting on your passenger seat or in your lap, even a GPS can get you stung!

You'l have to upgrade to the newest BT so you can skip songs via the HU and steering wheel

skipping songs via HU has been available since the early days of A2DP. the newer AVRCP will allow displaying of ID3 tags and even browsing of music with basic search capabilities, of course the HU must support it.

To be honest I'm not seeing anything exciting at all in the new iPhone. Most of the new features are just playing catch up with the latest android smartphones. The refusal to use industry standard connectors is also getting a bit tiresome, what with Android 4.1 jelly bean and Windows phone 8 coming out I think this decision only stands to lose market share for iPhone from this point.

And the adapter will at least provide Play/Pause/Next/Prev, just like BT A2DP. The only thing not confirmed is the ability to select playlists/artists/etc, features Android or USB never had anyway.

                            It's a non-issue really.

Just to be crystal clear; the iPhone 5 does indeed support simple command inputs for play/pause/stop/next/previous via the lightening connector interface (with hi-fi docks in mind). That being said, the current VAG MDI interface does not. MDI uses iPod-out connectivity for control input to Apple iPod compatible devices. The assumptions above are flatly wrong.

An update to MDI will be necessary if this functionality is to be available on the new iPhone 5.
