  • PROBLEMS: RNS510, Bluetooth, Steering wheel buttons, airbag fault

    Hey Guys,

This is my first post here, new member post aside.
I've actually posted this at golfmkv.com too.

I drive a MY05 Golf 1.9TDI, manual, with a lowline dash. I've got a few problems I'd appreciate some help with.

    Problem 1.

A couple of years ago I retrofitted a RNS510 into my Golf. I have not been able to use the buttons on my steering wheel since. That is except for the volume control. After one of the RNS510 firmware updates my battery started to drain over night, so my Dad (a VW tech) upgraded the CAN Gateway. I hoped that the buttons on the steering wheel might work after this. They do not.

My suspicion is that the RNS510 may be coded for a highline dash and steering wheel buttons, but I'm not an expert.

    Problem 2.

At some stage, before or after the RNS510, I cannot remember. I also had a Genuine Standard Bluetooth Kit fitted. The Bluetooth works great, but again, the steering wheel buttons to pick up and hang up don't work. Could be related to the above, I'm not sure. I have to look at the phone to see who is calling and to pickup.

I'd like to see who is calling on the RNS510. Is this a feature of the premium bluetooth kit? If so, could I purchase the unit and plug it straight into the wiring harness from the standard unit?

    Problem 3.

The airbag warning light came up on the dash about 12 months ago. The fault was reset 9 months ago, and stayed gone for about 3 weeks. The light came on when I closed the drivers side door one day (engine was running). I'm guessing either a wiring fault, or a sensor fault. I've read about connection issues under the driver seat, but don't know where to start with that.

    Problem 4.

I mentioned above that I have a lowline dash. Is it possible to retrofit a highline dash? If so, is it expensive/difficult?

I'd like to have the RNS510 integrate with the dash as it does in newer generation VW's.

    EDIT: I've previously found this

I ordered (direct from RossTech) a HEX-USB+CAN Interface, which was shipped same day (very impressed). Anyhow that should be here by the end of next week, so I can provide some diagnostics to anyone willing to help.

ALL help would be greatly appreciated.

The first two may relate to coding, heres the section in VCDS

Both short press and BAP shouldn't be ticked when used in a MK5. Also it's worth checking that Radio and Navigation are ticked on CAN Gateways installed list.

Not sure about Problem 3 and I'm not 100% on the specifics of 4 (but I do know you can put a Premium MFD from the Scirocco in the Golf 5, just not sure how).

Edit: The coding is in the Radio/Navigation section

Okay, my cable arrived today impressive fast shipping! I'll post my fault log in the next post. But I wasn't able to find the section you pointed out above. The Radio/Navigation sections were identical, but only listed three options, two of which weren't ticked.

Try disabling the central elec module (4F) by unticking the box in the CANbus (19) module from my limited knowledge and use in my 08 Tiguan that module is for the optional factory fitted sunroof. Your father may have inadvertently activated it when he upgraded the canbus module. That should get rid of one of the three errors in the canbus module

Not sure about 7D module either do you have heated seats?

Check that module 37 is activated in the CANbus module as well. The 2 other intermittent errors in the canbus module to me imply there maybe some not right with the cabling when the Bluetooth unit was connected try isolating the cabling and blue tooth unit and disable the 77 module and see if these errors still persist in the CANbus 19 module.

There is something faulty with one of your sensors wiring for your airbag module. You may need to see a VW dealer to resolve that as there is a risk static electricity may build up in the circuit when cables are disconnected and reconnected and activate the airbag when the battery is reconnected. Your father should know about this and what procedures to follow

Check your park lights and light sockets I suspect you have a bad connection there and a quick squirt of wd40 should sort that that should get rid of the error in module 09

NB DO AN AUTOSCAN BEFORE YOU CHANGE ANYTHING AND SAVE IT somewhere in case all goes tits up!

PS as a registered owner of the cable you can always email the above to Ross Tech and they should be to help. Email support is part of the package when you purchase it and I understand they are very good with this and often monitor this forum for issues

Cheers for the reply, I'd almost given up on getting any! Ok I disabled Central Electrics II

No, I do not have heated seats. I have read that all the MK5 Golf and Jetta Diesel's have them. they are called a PET heater and it's bascially a 1KW heater positioned just upstream of the heater matrix. It only works under certain circumstances though.

Regards the airbag, I think it could be related to this TSB. I suppose I could call VW to ask if my car could be affected.

Yes, one of my parking lights appears to have intermittently blown, I'll take a look at this on the weekend.

EDIT: Ok I've been through the CAN and recoded. Cleared all DTC's and will see how I go over the coming days. I think I've figured out why the steering wheel electrics don't work. I'll post back some more info on that over the weekend.

All codes have been successfully cleared, except for the faulty side light (which requires replacement) and the airbag fault. I've called VW, and they've advised that my car isn't affected by the TSB mentioned above, and recommend to get it in. Which I might entertain if I don't get any feedback on the fault code for it, nor anything useful from RossTech

The buttons on the steering wheel still don't work, but I'm sure the car is coded correctly. Can anyone help?

For anyone else interested, above is the link for information on the faulty airbag. And here is the supposed fix. I'll report back on my findings when I get the chance to perform the fix.

Still looking for a fix for the steering wheel buttons.

I have the same steering wheel in my 08 Tiguan, my coding is 0002022 yours is 0002042. Try changing this?
Please note my car is a manual, has a highline MFD and I also have cruise control.
Are you able to use the other 4 buttons on the RHS of the wheel to access the MFD functions? Check to see if the module 16 steering wheel has alternative options in the 19 Canbus module

The other day i installed a bluetooth 1K8 035 730 D module which is A2DP but does not display Caller ID carrier name or support phonebook list. This unit I believe is very similar to what you have but a later version D not B as you have.

The coding instructions for my unit were 412220, again this is slightly different as it is a later version than yours which from the above is coded 412120 but it may be worth a try.

Failing the above I think your problem may be in the coding of the RNS510 unit in either modules 37 and 56. Do you still have your original radio that you can pop back in to verify the source of the isssue? ie if the buttons work with your old radio then you know the issue lies with the coding of the Navi unit itself.

Finally I suggest you pm kamold for some advice on the coding of the RNS510. He is a "legend" when it comes to these units also I think he has a Golf V and he may be able to point you in the right direction with your steering wheel issue. You may want to send him an autoscan of your latest changes.

Thanks for all of those pointers (once again), I will give them a try over the weekend. Also I'm pretty sure that the problem is with the coding of the RNS510, because the previous head unit did work with my steering wheel buttons. I'll double check that, because I do indeed still have it. I have three actually the original RCD300, an RCD500 and an RNS510 in pieces after the HDD failed.

Failing all of the above, I'll contact kamold and ask if he can help me. Fingers crossed I don't have to bother him directly

I'm pretty busy at the moment selling our house and finding a new one but will help you out when I can if needed.
I have a MkV with upgraded CANBUS gateway, half height MFD and MFSW so can get the coding for you some time.

Ok, so I've swapped my current unit out with the faulty one. The faulty one is a version C head unit, my current one is a version B head unit.

The version C head unit is coded as follows: 080004000400008200 (Steering wheel buttons work)
The version B head unit is coded as follows: 08000400040000020000 (Steering wheel buttons don't work)

My guess is that the revision C has a lower firmware, which is why the 8th byte is missing.

I think I'll drop the hard drive from the working unit into the faulty unit. However, for people who are in a similar bucket to me, I've changed the coding on the revision B unit to be the same as the revision C aside from byte 8 which isn't codable. It does not resolve the problem. I'd imagine that there is a compatibility issue with my steering wheel buttons, the CAN Gateway and the revision B unit.

Kamold, if you want to troubleshoot this with me I'd be happy to work through this issue with you. But I'll be swapping back to my revision C unit.

Bambazonke, are you able to answer phone calls with the buttons on your steering wheel? I'll have to see if mine now work...

The revision C unit has issues getting a GPS fix. F**K!

So looking at the image in the earlier post, I see byte7 has main bit 0 on for the working one (i.e byte7=82 for working, =02 for not working). Did you enable this bit, and then do the <>* reset thing? Looking at bit 0 of byte7, it is certainly for the steering wheel controls... (might have mixed up bit 0 and bit 7, but both bit 0 and bit 7 are related to steering controls, so will be one of em hehe).
