Just USB

Not sure if this can be done but I was hoping to install a USB to play music.
i don't want to have a radio or cd player.
was hoping that I could just somehow install something that will play music from a USB.
does anyone have any ideas on something like this ?

You'll need to be more specific...

USB is as the acronym suggests a bus (universal serial bus). It is used to connect devices together. I presume you mean want to connect a USB storage device containing music to a head unit?

If so what sort of car do you want to put this in? What does it have currently? What other features do you want/not want? How much are you will to pay?

Most even low end head units have a USB interface port that you can plug in any old USB storage device to play music from. Alternatively there is likely a solution out there that will add a USB interface to your existing head unit.

What I would like is just a small input jack in my dash not a stereo that I can insert an iPod or a USB to play music.
the vehicle is a mk2 golf.
i want to keep the original stereo in the car this is the reason for not wanting a newer head unit.

Your best bet IMHO is to get an external music player and hook that up to an FM transmitter. Or better yet, a line in jack if your head unit has an AUX input.

I'm not that familiar with the stereo options in the Mk2s, but I'd imagine its a simple single-DIN setup.

Understand that you want to keep the stock look but if you want the cheap and cheerful option I would guess that the easiest would be to buy a cheap Sony or Kenwood head unit that has USB input and keep hold of the original stereo if you wanted to put it back in to get the car back to stock look...

Something like this has all the bits you need to fit it, I'm sure they are available elsewhere...

You can buy a cigarette adaptor which takes either a Sd card or a USB ,they come with a frequency which you tune your car radio to and it plays the music you have installed . is this what you mean ?

In my past experience with FM transmitters they work fine in the country but in capital cities the FM band is just way too saturated. You can't find any clear frequency to broadcast on. It works for a little while and then you drive a few kays and your music is replaced by some local talk back radio.
Needs to be hardwired or Bluetooth.

Yep any FM transmitter is crap. Stay away.

If your mk2 has a tape deck there's also a cassette tape to AUX connection so you can plug an iPhone or MP3 player in. They're real cheap but quality isn't great. At least it's wired and no installation necessary.
