  • B7 Passat - RNS-510 Firmware expectations

    Hi all,

I'm going to be picking up a new TDi passat in ~ 4 weeks, the model includes an RNS-510 unit. I've noticed that there seems to be a bit of variability in the firmware the unit ships with. As its a new car pickup is there something I should be insisting on from day 1?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

You can insist ... but there's really not much you can do if it's definitely a unit straight from factory.

Also not sure whether you'll be able to check what version it has of the day.

Just make sure they give you the maps DVD (might be in glovebox). I think v4.2 is still the latest version.

Firmware and maps are available on the Internet as well and it's easy to upgrade so it's not really something to fret over.

We're up to V5 CD_7679, if you don't mind the incorrect speed limits displayed on all motorways

Thanks for the advice. So which version of the maps is the most useful?

I'm still happily using the custom 4.2maps with AussieTig's POIs. Waiting for the next maps after v5 that fixes the dodgey speed limits.

That bad is it? Certainly grounds to justify a free upgrade to the hopefully soon to be released updated maps. I take it the maps are floating about online anyway, along with firmware.

Does 4.2 have the speed limits at all? Because you can turn them off in the RNS's menu

Would expect firmware 3970 and maps version 4.2.

A couple of weeks ago when I picked up my Skoda it had firmware 3984 & maps 7492 (4.1). I didn't get a map disc & whilst I ultimately paid for it, not worth the hassle asking.

Suffice to say within a week, I've upgraded to firmware 4020 & maps 7679 Some things are best done yourself.

I didn't get a map disk when I bought mine, but I asked the local dealer service manager for one and he got one ordered in for me.
It's outdated but at least I have an original there in the glovebox.

So to give an update I have recieved the 510 with a hardware version of h61, software 3970 and map version 7492. Which I assume is 4.1.

So no revelations with a new model but where should I go to next with regard to updates. If its worth going anywhere at all?
