  • RNS510 Question, newbie... so please forgive if asked too many times

    Hey guys,

I have just purchased a 2011 MY2012 Golf R that has rear view camera, park assist, MDi

    Now to my question...

I am looking at purchasing a RNS510 unit either off ebay or through APR. (unless you can tell me where else to buy?)

Can you please point me in right direction what unit (what code c, d, e, f, g )?
Will I need to purchase a new bluetooth unit? (there is bluetooth in there already, but not sure if its integrated with the existing unit or seperate)
Will my rear view camera, park assist and MDI work with it?
The MFD, will that work and do I need to get it coded? If yes, who would you recommend here in Adelaide?

Thanks for the help in advance and sorry if this has been covered before

    Ebay is cheapest option.
APR will make it a no hassle experience.
Just get a C revision or later. These have LED screens. Newer revisions just have a 40GB HDD and slightly faster processor.

You didn't mention that you have factory bluetooth, but you hinted at it by asking if you need a new one...if you have a factory one then no you don't need a new one. If you don't have one, get a 9WZ module.

Existing accessories (including MFD integration) will work with the new head unit once coded correctly with VCDS.
If you are daunted by the job contact Transporter who is a very experienced mobile mechanic who has done this install more times than I've had hot breakfasts...

Good advice from kamold is nothing new.

I was in the same situation as you avdo. I chose APR as I wanted backup should I need it. I fitted a "c" to my MY12 R and spent hours trying to get the coding right, so, unless you have acces to VCDS and are fairly conversant with coding, get someone else to do it. Transporter would be the obvious choice for you.

It was easy to fit and get all working, but the RVC had me stumped, got it in the end.

That link is to a non-LED C unit.

FWIW, that's also not the original Lithuanian guy that most have bought from.

Can't remember his ebay ID. But you can certainly skype him and ask. His name is Tadas.

                    EDIT: Ebay ID is used_parts_specialists

There's a thread dedicated to our friend:

Looks like he doesn't have anything listed on eBay at the moment.

So suggest you contact him to enquire.

as everyone else already mentioned - just unplug the old n plug the new. everything will work.
although u'll need to do some vcds coding to tell the car that u now have an rns510 unit in place.

however, if u want to make use of voice control for the rns510, u'll need to do some re-wiring so the mic is wired into the rns510, instead of the bluetooth unit, as it currently is.
if u leave it as is, u'll only have voice control for phone calls.

going slightly off topic now - why does the top spec performance golf not come with the rns510 as standard?!??!?!
it comes with the best of everything else - why did vw skimp on the headunit?

Yeah, it is definitely a nice profit maker for them, no way that thing is worth $2500... the US market did it a bit differently, but then the US versions of the Golf R really cut back on some of the nice things we got standard to meet their silly low prices they all demand there.

                          Thanks mate, much appreciated.

As for the voice control, I'm not too fussed about it as long as I can take/make phone calls.

I asked the same question when I was buying the car, and dealers response was "its easier this way to make more money".

I found a unit for sale here in Australia on ebay, link below.
