  • MFD Radio Navigation System - Reverse Camera

The 2006 Highline i just purchased has a MFD Radio Navigation System like the following:

Will this unit support a reverse camera? Fleabay has a heap of cameras which when wired to your reverse lights will automatically enable the camera when Reverse gear is selected. Will the unit display the image automatically, or will i have to select a different input?

I had a read of the user manual, but there is no mention of reverse cameras.

I would imagine if the easy way to tell would be that there would be a connection from the back that would be labeled back up camera plus there would be a trigger wire for the reverse lights to activate the system etc. If there is not a dedicated reverse camera connection the other option would be if there is a extra input connection for an auxilary input this could be used , you would need to select this each time you were reversing . A bit of a pain I am afraid , but someone else who is familiar with this exact model may have more info on the exact functions this unit has . Obviously if the camera was an important feature then an alternative head unit could be used , I have a Chinese unit with reverse camera/ digital TV/ built in GPS/ aux input /bluetooth for phone and media streaming /touch screen operation plays DVDs etc and am fm radio . for a paltry sum of around $359 plus camera around $30 delivered to AU eBay Australia: Buy new & used fashion, electronics & home d

You could probably do it if it has a video input.

Haven't seen the back of one of these for a while, so I couldn't tell you whether it does or not.

Something to be aware of is that the video input on most OEM units use RGB input and the cheap cameras on the net are composite video.

I have been looking at getting a camera for my RNS510 and the cost to get a Composite to RGB converter is about $150 - $300

ok, i finally got around to having a crack at installing the camera, and there is no standard RCA input on the back of the head unit. There is a 10 pin mini din input which seems to be the video input according to the diagram. Jaycar didn't have a suitable RCA to 10 pin adaptor.

I'm fairly certain the unit does support video, as there is an AUX option in the menu, and when selecting this option, you get a safety message saying TV picture won't be displayed when vehicle is moving.

So, can someone firstly confirm that this 10 pin plug is the video input, and secondly, where i can get my hands on a 10 pin to RCA adaptor?

I've confirmed the 10 pin mini din is the AV input, and some more research tells me that i need the Sega Saturn AV Cable which has the 10 pin mini din connecter to RCA. Do i still need a composite to component video converter as well? The camera is similar to this one.

I found the following converter, but unsure if i need it, or if the Sega cable above will get me out of trouble?

I fear that while the SS has the same plug, it doesn't have the right pins assigned and it looks like you need to close a circuit in order for it to actually show on the screen. The converter is def the best/only option, but you'll need to use that button for the video to show, unless you can short it through the reverse light some how (could be risky).

you mentioned that there was a message that said that video would not be played when the car is in motion, would a reversing camera not be pretty useless if it cuts out when the car begins to reverse?

I'll have to test it again, but pretty sure the message was triggered when the van traveled more than 10km/h or thereabouts. Didn't test it in reverse either.

I'm planning on powering the camera from the reverse light, so it's only triggered when reverse gear is selected.

Ok, i purchased the Multimedia Interface i linked in my previous posts. Still waiting for it to arrive.

Can you suggest where i can get the following feeds from somewhere near the headunit? The Ebay ad describes the following:
                    brown cable - earth
                    red cable +12V
                    yellow cable +12V IGN
blue/white cable +12V IGN (over a switch to look while driving) whatever that means?

All those connections would be available from the back of the head unit. As for the last wire feed I'm thinking the camera can be operated any time by using the green switch which could also be connected to a 12v ignition source. Please advise how install went as I'm keen to know, cheers.

It normally takes 4 weeks for packages to arrive from the UK, but i'll update the thread once i've had a crack at it.

Happy to report the camera is installed and working perfectly. I wired it in such a way that the screen automatically flicks to video (aux) when reverse gear is selected with no need to press the green button.

If anyone needs more detailed info on the install, let me know.

Hello there bluefin321, Can you send me some information on how you have got the screen to flicker to aux showing the camera image when the reverse gear is selected? My email is makka101@live.com. Thank you
