No I didn't, as I had no idea I had to. Thanks for the info.
I hope the RNS I retrofitted had this done too!

I did mine recently, I actually bought a 2nd hand gti and removed the rcd300, called the original dealer and explained the situation to their service department (not sales).

I gave them my VIN, Serial on the back of the unit and they called,e back with a pin by the end of the day.

Initially they said they'd need to bring in the car and look at it, but when I explained I had already removed it they said no probs, no charge for this either.

Props to this dealership, as they had no record of me or ownership, or prior business, but were practical with the situation.

Update on my email to VW Assist so far:

Initial email sent Monday, 5 March 2012
Acknowledgement from VW 3 days later (8/3); stating "looking into it with XXX case number" (sounds promising so far, despite 3 days just to be told a case number)
Email sent to them 8 days later (13/3): Reminding them of this case and to see if any update... as I heard nothing since.
            No response.
Email sent to them 15 days later (20/3): Reminding them of this case and to see if any update again.
Response received from them the next day, 16 days since start (21/3): Apologies for delay, we can't help, you need to go and see the dealer which is XXXX (don't think they even read my original problem)

I'd hate to have a "real" problem and to have to take it to VW after this runaround!

Anyway... I will let it go.

I have upgraded my head unit from a rcd510 to rns510. I bought the car 2nd hand and was not given the original rcd510 pin.

I have proof of ownership, vin, etc etc can anyone help get the original rcd510 pin? I would like to be able to sell the nit as it is just sitting on the shelf a the moment.

              Regards Ben

Go to your local dealer. Prove ownership and they can look up your pin for you from vin.

                  You would think so but....
Not always that easy (read two posts above yours for my saga - and hence the reason for this thread)

Notice I said 'can' rather than 'will'. Be insistent. Its your car, not vws.
