  • EOI: Group install in Canberra for RVC, RNS-510 etc?

    Hi Guys

    This is just a thought...

I am new to the forum but surely there must be others in the same position as me: looking to install an RNS-510, RVC, OPS etc but need to get to SYD etc. to get this done. I have spoken to European Autotech and they can supply/install these but I personally cannot get to SYD (easily) and especially on weekdays. There will be other people/places in SYD as well but I have not really looked - again due to the fact that I find it hard to get to.

Was wondering what the possibility is of getting a few of us together & getting someone to come down for the day/weekend and get a few done in one hit? Not sure if OPS can be done offsite (probably not due to drilling/painting etc), but surely the RNS-510 upgrade from RCD-510, RVC could be done in someone's home garage?

European Autotech (and probably others) can supply & install new units so makes it nice and easy if you can get to SYD, but there may be other options - eg buy from eBay and get someone to come down and install? Not sure if they will just supply the unit. Also if there are few of us, maybe we can convince someone to come down - I don't know?

One of the dealers may be able to supply the units (I know they can definitely supply & install), but this may be a bit expensive (north of $3300 I believe just for supply/install the RNS-510)

Also CVWC Belconnen reckon they can install/code the RNS-510 (but you have to source the units yourselves) and I imagine would only take an hour or so labour (all going well).

I am not a 100% confident in sourcing units myself (eg from eBay) and probably want an easy/sure/plug and play option with the least mucking around, but these can be had for ~$1000 supplied & so is definitely the cheapest way.

I don't really want to be the organiser or anything for this, because I don't know enough about this (apart from what I have read in these forums and also stated in this post) but happy to facilitate in anyway I can. I just wanted to plant the seed... and hopefully it can all be sorted out magically in this thread

Few options there but none are ideal (in my case anyway); or a one stop shop in Canberra (except for the dealers of course).

    Thoughts?

Also if anyone from SYD/VIC/QLD can come down to install, would appreciate you posting on this thread to express interest.

Ideally if we could keep comments within the thread (rather than PM) that would be great.. would be easier to keep track of it for all, including people that come afterwards.

There are plenty of people with the VCDS cable floating around that can do the coding (myself included). The RNS install is *very* easy, the hardest part being removing the surrounding fascia (which isn't all that hard) otherwise it's a couple of screws and a plug.

Depending on what's happening when I might just come for a drive down Canberra way to say Hi anyway (Although with a new baby due in March we will see how my time gets allocated).

RVC is something I want to do in my Mk6 Cab, just waiting on ECS to get the kits back in stock (preferably with a Mk6 wiring kit too).

If it has an engine or heartbeat it's going to cost you.

Great, if you are in Canberra I would be keen on getting this done if not already!
      Thanks

Looks like I am the only one... In that case, can some one please (and I have read all the stuff on this forum and other sites already, but has got me confused!) point me to a unit that will just work (I will then sort out someone to code the RNS in for me).

My Golf model is a MY 11 GTI ED 35 with
      bluetooth,
      MDI and
AUX in in the centre console.

      Hope this is enough information.

So what I am after is:
      1) a link to a RNS-510 product that will work (prefer a later model, with LED etc). Seen a few on eBay obviously but just not sure which, or can I just pick any Europe one etc. There is one for sale on the forums too but again not sure - see (2)

      2) For ease of fitting (ie. both coding and physical install), does it matter whether it is a C, F, H etc version (I know they may have different HDD sizes) but just want something that is easiest to code/fit for someone if i give them the instructions and also to install plugs and have least amount of CANBUS etc. hassles given that the installers in Canberra are not as savvy as SYD etc. in this area.

      3) Will I get the coding instructions that I can give to someone and they can just do it, and everything will just work? Or can I still have hassles (eg I have heard BT stopped working, battery draining etc).

Thanks... I know this has been covered over and over again but I am confused and don't want to shell out $1000 on a unit that may not work.

        No responses?

        I have more questions...

I can get version f for $1250 or version H for $1300 from AudiUpgrades on eBay including 4.1 Oz maps.
        1) Has anyone bought from them?
        2) Which one should I get of the two?

        - wanting to get this ASAP but don't want to get the wrong one or anything...
        TY.

I'm in Canberra, MKVI GTI and definitely interested in bluetooth, possibly reversing sensors and very possibly satnav.

Thanks. I have not had much interest / luck TBH.

Have just ordered an RNS510 and will try to get it installed here by someone from the forum that knows a bit more than I, hopefully.
Still looking to do RVC/OPS... after that.

I should then be in a position (all going well) to provide some advice for others in Canberra that are new to this or not confident regarding how to go about doing this.

EDIT: I bought a version F with 4.1 maps, hopefully it will work - I have no idea.

I'm in Canberra and have a VAG COM cable if you would like to borrow it. I'm in Jerrabomberra. You can have Pete Shelley at CVWC do the install as he does lots of BT, RVC, RNS upgrades. He's normally very busy and you may take a few weeks to get in.

PM me if you would like to use the cable.

              Cheers,

                Hi Andrew

Thanks for the offer, very nice of you! I will let you know if I need it. The RNS should be here this week and one of the other members has offered to give me a hand.

As for CVWC Belco, I have called them several times regarding the RVC (including twice yesterday, just so that I was clear in what I wanted done after they said "No" the first time), but they were not interested in installing it: They were very nice and helpful over the phone but unfortunately for me: said it can be a "nightmare", "takes too long" and "too hard" and so they don't do it? Asked me to try the dealerships instead and also advised that is probably just best to buy the car with RVC from the factory.

I was hoping that they would do it to be honest... as I had heard they do "just about everything".

I did ask Lennocks and they told me they won't do it either - assuming that Gerald Slaven is probably the same?

I am not sure what I am missing - why is it so difficult to get this done in Canberra - given that I am willing to pay? Maybe they had lots of unexpected / fiddly issues with previous installs and are a bit gun-shy now.... or maybe too busy with other (possibly less fiddly) work and so can be selective; which is not uncommon and very understandable in general Canberra with other things (eg tradies)?

There's lots of people willing to do it in other states though, seemingly.

                Anyway, I will keep looking.

                Cheers

                  G'day javab0y;

Keen to hear more about your experience in getting the RNS-510 installed, and any pointers re. buying the RNS-510 (presumably you bought it off eBay?). I picked up a 118TSI Comfortline Jetta jast month, and I really do think an RNS-510 will finish it off nicely (along with whiter headlights and LED DRLs ).

                  Cheers

                    2) AFAIK there is no difference in install between the versions. It really should be plug and play, coding adds the integration but mine looked like it worked fine before I coded it up. (Not that I bothered to find the limitations of a non coded unit since I could code it myself ).

                    3) Coding is pretty straight forward with battery drain issues effecting older models which were upgraded, I believe yours is new enough so it shouldn't matter.

If it has an engine or heartbeat it's going to cost you.

I have not received the unit yet, posted today now so should be here Monday and will try to install next week. I can put you in touch with this guy once I have ensured that everything is a-OK & also installed?
No problem. I am happy to give something back to the forum, if I can. He is on eBay but I bought outside to save costs.

If you are buying it for the Satnav dont waste your money.

The latest maps are already out of date by about a year.

It doesnt have proper text to speech.

Ie it says things like Stay on this road for a very long time!!!!!!!

When turning it doesnt give the street name in the voice command.

An $89 nav from Aldi does a better job.

For $3000 the VW are absolute crap.

Ok to all the Canberra people: I have got my RNS installed and working today, thanks to erkinesen!! Very nice and helpful bloke.

                          So here's what I did:
                          1) Bought an RNS-510 from a seller called AudiUpgrades on eBay (even though I did the transaction outside eBay), his name is Martin and is based in Townsville. Very nice, honest, and helpful - good start there for me. Got a Version F for less than $1300 including PayPal and Postage. Arrived yesterday.

                          2) Then I found out about Erkin on the forum, he too was super nice and helpful - came home and installed the unit for me this morning! Wow.

                          3) Everything worked except for MFD but because we were running out of time, Erkin left me his VAG-COM and I managed to find the right boxes to tick and get it going (thanks to the forums!) after a few more searches.

The only thing that had to be done was go into Option 19 (CANBUS) and then go Into "Installation List" and then Select 37 Navigation and that's it!

It is quite simple (once you have done it).

While I was at it and had access to erkinesen's VAG-COM, I coded the Emergency Call (spanner button) to dial VW assist in AU; and also got the "Dancing Needles" on startup going. Again thanks to the info in the forums.

Best of luck everyone, and now to get the OPS/RVC done....

EDIT Can anyone with an RNS/RCD with no OPS and no RVC tell me what happens when you put the car in reverse? Not sure what mine used to do prior to RNS upgrade, but now it is blank screen with "look out" or some words on there. Also it takes a while to go away (3-5 secs) after you put into Drive from Reverse. May have been there all along but not sure anymore.

I retrofitted an RNS510 and have no OPS or RVC, my display does not change when engaging reverse gear. It sounds as if you have coded the RNS to think there is a reverse camera attached and therefore it is displaying a black screen (as there is no camera connected).

Any idea where to change this? Is this via the VAG-COM?
EDIT: Tried a few check boxes around reverse camera in 39 NAVIGATION and that seems to have fixed it.
