RNS510 Version F - Aust eBay seller

Thinking of upgrading my RCD510 to RNS510 and I stumbled upon this seller on eBay.

Sent him an email asking how low he would go and he said $1200 couriered to Melbourne. He's also got a contact in Melbourne that does installation for an additional $150.

Sounds dodgy? Anyone bought/dealt with him before?

Personally I wouldnt have one for a boat anchor.

Got one in my new Passat and the maps which were updated 2 weeks ago are so far out of date they arent worth having.

For the price they charge in a new car they are crap.

1 map every 2 years and its still at least a year or so out of date.

I have a Tomtom that gives me a free map every 3 months that is as up to date as you can get and it cost a tenth of the price of a 510


IE the new Gateway wasnt on the old one and the Bribie interchange which opened last year (2010) isnt on the new one.

Also doesnt give spoken street names at turns like most portable ones have done for several years.

Come over the Gateway bridge and it says " Stay on this road for a very long time" How crap is that.

Tomtom says " Stay on this road for 72km" and gives the Bribie road as next turnoff point..

Had I known it was this bad I would have got them to take it out before I bought the car as it was all optioned up with the other things I liked but didnt particularly want a GPS.

Everyone to their own though I guess.

No worries was just trying to save you from buying a pig in a poke when you can buy a Chinese one that runs windows and all sorts of Nav systems for about $500.

Wish I had done that.

Looking at his listing I would say that English is not his first language by the spelling and grammar mistakes in the text.

He has good feedback but that doesnt always mean a lot.

If you had (got the Chinese Dim Sim one), you probably wish you didn't. POS, in short. Lots of little niggles and issues that will drive you nuts. Had one in our previous mk5 golf we sold a year ago.

That's why this time around, I just stick with the stock headunit (RC510) and use a standalone Sat Nav (Garmin). All functioning perfectly...bliss.

I have an F version imported from the UK for about $1,600 (inc fast shipping), installed myself which is very easy, just need someone with VCDS to code it up so it integrates properly.

When I got mine everything on eBay was in that $1,300 - $1,800 range (with a few much closer to the full $3k) and I picked one that looked reasonable and had decent feedback. There was no "F" units at all listed when I got mine which is why I went with a UK seller.

For a unit already in Australia that's pretty damn cheap. I'd be looking at using Paypal for that little bit of extra protection too.

The installation cost you were quoted is pretty good too, if you're not comfortable, use them, but it really is quite simple and I'm sure there is someone local who would be happy to lend a hand if you ask nicely (and offer beer ).

And I definitely appreciated Hillbilly's (and everyone elses who contributed) advice and heads up on this, like I said. I've done quite a fair bit of research on this and know what I might be getting myself into. I just did not want this to turn into another debate of why the RNS510 is good or bad etc. I know it's a very outdated system and I'm currently using a Galaxy S II with Google Maps + Navigation for my satnav needs. But the whole integration bit is really enticing for me that possibly outweighs the cons.

Again, really appreciate everyone's advice on this.

What do you think of the Version F so far? Any regrets? Sounds like $1200 delivered is a good price then. Good point on the PayPal, since the deal might be done outside of eBay.

Watch out for stolen RNS510's!
Had mine ripped out from the dash while it was in the repair shop.

Anyway, you should be fine frozze. I got mine for the same reason - I prefer it's look, interface, and having good enough maps only one button away. If needed I always have Google Maps on the SGS2 just like yourself.

And of course the RNS510 has dead reckoning which no portable system does.
