There is provision for short and long instructions but I havent bothered following up on it.

Im probably wrong again but did read a bit about it a while ago.
I don't understand what you mean, can you rephrase the question?
Do you mean, 'Does the RNS need to load voice 'tags' before voice control will work?' - if so then the answer is no. It just attempts to recognise your commands as spoken eg 'Radio' or 'New destination' or 'stop route guidance'

Thats what I meant. I took it to mean you can add your own voice tags if you are so inclined

You either have voice control turned off via coding, or the mic is not connected.
        Nevermind,
I recently had a similar issue. My problem was man made, but I agree with kamold. If you are getting "Pardon" twice then "Cancel", and a return to the previous screen it means the system isn't "hearing" an instruction that it can act on. Even if it can't "understand" what you're saying it should try to guess then ask you if its guess is the function that you want looking for a Yes/No response. Something like "Did you want - Navigation?". If the Pardon/Cancel happens when trying any voice instructions to any mode of operation including Bluetooth it would seem that your mic isn't working. Not sure if you've got BT, but if you can hear someone handsfree and they can't hear you, as well as the other voice commands not working then it is highly likely to be a fault in the mic circuit.

It's easy enough to check. I'd check that the mic hasn't been unintentially muted, but I would've thought that it would revert to default (On) after the system is shut down then restarted. Also, if anyone has been accessing your coding recently you might want to ask someone with VCDS to check that the mic is still activated, and that it hasn't been mistakenly coded out. When kamold was good enough to check my coding he found that VCDS threw up a fault indicating an open circuit. Getting your coding checked wont necessarily tell you where the problem is, but will most likely tell you what the problem is - coding or wiring (open circuit).
