  • RCD510 retrofit into Golf Mk5 not recognising MDI

Hey guys, I've retrofitted my RCD510 into a friends Mk5 GTI. We updated the can bus, did the install and recoded the head unit and all is working fine but we cannot get the previous MDI interface to be recognised. We've tried some settings with VAGCOM and still no success. Setting Media Interface 3 doesn't work as I think it's an older model.

Does anyone have any suggestions or experiences with this retrofit? I've been searching the forums and various DIY sites like my-gti but no results for our specific issue.

    Thanks in advance,
    Steve

Hey all, nothing from anyone who's read this?

I've found that the car is using one of the original iPod connectors. See pic below.

Am I right in assuming that this is not compatible with the RCD510? Or if it is, what do I need to do to get it working?

    Cheers,
    Steve

Would've thought with most things, newer models should be backward compatible.

Otherwise it looks like newer MDI is on the cards!

In the meantime I can suggest searching this UK dealer's online store based on the part number:

They tend to have descriptions of the part in question such as what it will fit or is compatible to.

Also do a search through all their media interface cables for the correct part (assuming the worse).

Will be cheaper to buy it from them and you pay no 20% VAT.

Does it have the plug with a short lead ipod adapter in the centre console or the glovebox?
Looks more like the OEM Ipod adapter rather than the MDI - I may be wrong as I don't have either.
The MDI inerface for Ipod looks like this:

It's not compatible - I had to remove this connector when I upgraded to an RNS510.

I recently upgraded from the RCD 500 to the RNS 510 and found that my existing iPod adapter wasn't compatible. FYI the part number for the adapter I had was 000 051 444 K.
