  • iPad 2 wont charge in MK6 GTI?

    Hey guys,

Just a thing i found is that my iPad 2 wont charge in my GTI adidas via the MDI cable...WHY!!! My iPod touch and iPhone do charge but iPad doesnt...Kinda hard to put a iPad in the small slot in the armrest...but anyway, anyone know why it doesnt charge?

Does it say "Not Charging"? Like this:

    iPad: Charging the battery

A "standard" USB port supplies 500mA (or 0.5A) of power, the iPhone charger puts out 1.1A the iPad charger puts out 2A. If the stock MDI only outputs the standard 500mA that will explain it.

If it has an engine or heartbeat it's going to cost you.

Its like the situation at home. If youi plug the iPhone up tot he computer, it says its charging. And it does.

If you plug the iPad into the computer, it does not say its charging - but it does but at a MUCH slower rate (overnight).

I would imagine the iPad needs more charge than the car socket gives.

Yes, it says at the top "Not Charging" im thinking it maybe because the cars not turned on...but im pretty sure all my other iDevices charge when the key is turned to 1.

The iPad will charge. You just have it in standby. If the iPad is turned on, it won't.

As funkay has said it will charge when off, not when on because there is not enough power being supplied. As I said above the other idevices need less power so will survive and charge nicely with less power, the iPad uses a little more so need the extra ampage.

iPad 2 won't charge from head unit

              Hi Guys,

That is correct, the iPad requires more current than the standard head unit can supply to get the correct charging capability ( the little volt symbol inside the battery icon)

It is likely the iPad will maintain it's charge when plugged in, but very little chance of it charging.

The same scenario exists with the apple wall warts. An iPhone charger will not charge an iPad, an iPad charger will charge both iPhone and iPad .

My wife runs an eBay business and we specifically import 12v chargers which correctly charge iPads and iPhones in car, of course it's not as elegant as an MDI cable.

For the record, I have an aftermarket head unit in my MKv jetta, and it charges my iPhone with no problem, but will not charge my iPad, so keep that charger in the glove box.

If you do need an iPad charger in the car, head to eBay and search for a store called ' handi phone accessories'
