Unfortunately you have the dreaded Regensburg syndrome. Better than swineflu but probably just as annoying.
It is more of a glitch . You can try updating your firmware but it seems hit and miss according to others. Some have fixed the problem by downgrading their firmware.I am not suggesting you do this just reporting what i have read. Go over to vwnavi.com for more info.
I've always been deeply suspicious about the Regensburg syndrome being a problem with the owner (or dealer) not the RNS510. So here goes with my experiences - may be totally wrong of course...
When my Tig was delivered, dealer had loaded the Aussie maps, unit was picking up lots of satellites, but map was blank. Dealer puzzled. Eventually told me to drive around for a bit and it 'would fix itself' - which it didn't.
Noticed it kept changing its Lat/Long co-ordinates from a position that was clearly in Europe (which is why the map screen was blank, since Europe isn't part of Australia. Not lately anyway).
So - entered my home address (which satnav was quite happy to look up, since it had the Aussie map) and saved it as the unit's 'Home' address. Problem solved, as that wiped out the stored Lat/Long (which is, of course, the factory location).
Dealer rang next day to ask how things went - told him the fix - long silence as he had a 'doh' moment. Recovered by saying 'yes, we usually save the customers home address in the unit for them, and so never have that problem' (Ha!)
So - I recommend you just delete ALL saved locations in your RNS510 and see what happens...
Mine fixed itself after going for a drive when i loaded the new firmware a while back.
Initially it just displays a white background but should come good.
Depends how old the car is etc as it may need the can gateway upgrade by the sound of it.

There is no unit home address, the RNS 510 saves the last location it was at when the unit powers off (20 minutes after the car is turned off). The home address you enter is purely a name of a location that you have shortcuts to. It has nothing to do with the location that is saved.
Units that have the problem don't save this last location and start up in Germany and the maps cannot be used until the GPS location is updated as which point you can enter an address.

Manual. Booklet 3.4 RNS510 Page 89 "You can specify an address as a home address or edit the stored home address" etc etc.
As delivered to me, my RNS510 had a stored home address which (since it doesn't exist in Australia) showed as a Lat/Long position. Page 80 of same manual also makes it clear that the unit is quite happy to store locations which aren't on its current maps. Deleting this paticular entry (by replacing it with an Aussie location) killed all reference to Germany. Forever.
Personally, I don't care how it stores things - but the above is what the manual says and it agrees with my experiences.
