  • V3 Maps available this week

Just got the following response from Volkwagen Australia regarding the crappy map and SDHC problems with my RNS510 purchased in January. The good news is the new map is almost here - the bad new is I have to buy it.

Thank you for your recent correspondence.

Firstly please accept our sincere apologies for the unexpected delay in
    responding to your email.

Over the life of any product, some changes and modifications may be
made. Unfortunately it would seem that in this instance you have
received an earlier version of the RNS510 unit which does not support
the media as mentioned in the owners manual.

Unfortunately the only way to resolve this issue would be to replace the
    RNS510 unit.

In regards to the sat/nav software, there is a new version of this
software which should hopefully be available this week. Please confirm
availability with the parts department of your prefered Volkswagen
retailer. They will also be able to confirm if the DVD should be
supplied when you purchase this update.

Good reason to avoid the Sat nav system and the associated initial and subsequent costs.

When I was writing up my sales contact with my dealership, I asked them to write in free map upgrades for the life of the vehicle as long as I got it serviced with them. From what I understand The maps will be installed on the hard drive rather than a new DVD having to be purchased.

And that is why i am looking at the Zenec alternative.

Free map upgrades and all/most of the functionality of the RNS510 for less cost upfront.

I'll stick with the RNS-510 and just put map upgrades in the contract as per hcvo1

Thanks for the info JPH. Btw, I'd be pushing them to replace the RNS510 if that is their official response

Map upgrades included? That is a really good idea and I'm p1ssed I didn't think of it. It's a no loss situation for the salesman upfront so should be an easy detail to swing.

Then the dealer would be breaking the terms of the maps (??). Good if you can swing that but V2 would still be good enough for most people i would have thought.

Not with all the road updates happening in Melbourne. East Link has opened. There is still working going on the M1 with a whole bunch of new offramps and on ramps on City Link.

So the Map updates will be great.

However for the $1200 price to upgrade... (for those who didnt request free map updates) its a rip off.
