Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • HDD for MDI

Hi there. I have an MDI in my R36. I have 2 portable 2.5″ drives. One won’t spin up, the other spins up 3 out of 4 starts. Given these work OK on the PC, I assume they require more juice than the interface is supplying.

Can anybody recommend an Hdd being used successfully? (Probably needs to be a drive sold as an external with the enclosure as the power consumption of the USB to sata interfaces differs from one enclosure to the next. )

I suppose I could suppliment using the 12v supply in the glovebox, but am concerned with the less than clean shutdown when the ignition is turned off. Any thoughts?

    Thanks,
    Steve

mmm, feeling less than bright. There is no 12v socket in the glove box.

      128GB SSD for $299

It may be only me that has an interest in having a large number of mp3's available from the MDI. In any case, "computer parts land" has Kingston 128GB solid state storage units for $299. Runs a treat on the MDI and unlike a normal HDD, has no moving parts so will be OK bouncing around the glovebox in the passat.

How much storage do you want? You can buy a 64GB USB memory stick for around $170, 32GB units start a bit over $100.
