First of all, retrofitting anything in a VW is not recommended as even the so called "experts" almost never get it right 100%.
Everything these days is controlled by the computer. You even have to tell it to supply power to individual cables before you get anything. There are a million and one settings and I can make a safe bet that unless you work for VW and were trained in VW electronics, you haven't got a hope in hell to get it right. A perfect example is the power drain issue in another thread here.

To answer some of your questions, the hard drive is partitioned into two. One 10Gb for the maps and one 20Gb for your mp3. Not wma. Mathematically however, your 20Gb partition will end up looking like an 18.62Gb. Nothing you can do about it.

All steering wheel controls need to be coded. Like I said, unless you know 100% what you are doing, good luck.

Firmware version can be read off the "hidden menu" screen. Hold the "setup" button until the 3rd menu appears. About 15 sec. Yours may not be active. In that case you need to use VCDS.

A map DVD from VW retails for about $1200.

There's currently some maps available on ebay (http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI....=STRK:MEWNX:IT)

Sounds like the unit hasn't been coded correctly. Mine was done by Volkspower in Melbourne, and it works perfectly. It shouldn't be a big deal to fix, so I'd suggest a having a chat to the people who installed it.

just get it coded & it should work fine. Unlike previously purported it really is easy just get a cable from ross-tech & code it yourself or pay someone to do it. steering wheel controls can be enabled that way as well as other cool features. updated your car's code by vagcom will also help with the mfd.

wrt maps it's expensive, send me a msg & i might be able to point you in the right direction.

Wrt firmware don't worry about the version just load 2660, if it updates that means you have another firmware version. 2660 is the newest firmware version besides 2680 (which resets all your settings ...you need vagcom again for this) Before you update though do look at the revision number of your rns 510 there are 3. If you had an eye out for it you will have revision c. I don't recommend firmware updates for revision A rnses.... as for revision number you will need to look at the stickers on your rns 510 it is a serial number followed by an alphabet.

Bulls**t. If you know what you're doing and understand how everything interacts you won't have a problem.

More BS. The power drain issue is simple, it's the guys with the knock off chinese rubbish head units that make it complex.

I'll explain the power drain issue for you.

Fitting a 3RD generation (Mark VI) headunit or the RNS 510 with a software version over 1200 (<1200 was Mark V and >1200 was Mark VI) to a MY07 or earlier car requires a CAN bus gateway upgrade as there are new commands. SIMPLE.

Fitting one of the POS chinese made units which have poorly implemented CAN bus interfaces may result in them not switching off. Solution is to throw them in the bin and either buy another unit and hope it works (it's pot luck) or buy a OEM headunit like the RNS 510.

Heaps of info on the power drain issue is on my website at www.my-gti.com.

Thanks for the help guys. I will take it back to German Auto who installed it. They have vagcom. My rns-510 is a 'b' version. Is this still ok to load the newer firmware? I notice Maverick that on your site the firmware jumps from 1200 to 2680, what is 2660 that plasmod3 is talking about?

I have worked out that I can store a fair bit of music at even the higher bitrate mp3's. Briliant idea.

I would load 2660 on (it's on my site) as it's an upgrade firmware whereas the only version of 2680 is the factory firmware which wipes everything on the RNS 510 requiring you to reinstall all the music, maps and so forth and recode all the settings.

Installing and coding this stuff isn't actually that bad if you do your research, get the info, and have access to VAGCOM / VCDS coding capability to set everything up right.

It's not rocket science, if you understand the technology and educate yourself before you do the work you won't have a problem (or if you do you will be able to solve the problem).

On the other hand if you're someone who has no idea at all and hope that by following some instructions you can do the work than good luck.

Clearly you fall into the second category but don't beat yourself up over it as I'm sure you're good at something

I see people in IT all the time who get themselves into a mess because they think they can do something but in all reality have NFI and because they don't understand how everything goes together they have no idea how to fix or troubleshoot the problem(s).

Thanks for that. At this stage I haven't loaded any maps or music or anything at all on to the rns so maybe 2680 is the go. Trouble is I dont have vagcom. Are you suggesting if I load 2660 I won't need vagcom? I can't sem to find 2660 can you point me there please? I can only find 2680.

My part no is 1T0 035 680 B, which according to your site can be upgraded to 2660.

Just flattened my battery trying to copy a dual layer dvd of about 8gb of mp3's into the rns. I have a battery charger but where the hell is the battery?

You can charge it from the terminals under the bonnet.

If the battery has gone flat it could be on it's way out and you have to make sure it's a sound battery before running the firmware update.
