Well... I am so p.... off with the fact that I paid so much money for it and VW are still asking another $1200 if you want a new v.3 map disc. I know VW is a premium brand here on Oz but let me tell you, it is a "common" car in Germany, nothing special. Like I said before, next time I will be only too happy to stick a TomTom on my window.

Again, me in the same boat on this one.. I'm asking the same questions, e.g. Why is this the case? Why has VW done it this way? etc. etc.

btw - I emailed my dealer this week (just purchased car last week) asking for the installation disks AND a confirmation that I will NOT have to pay for the new (version 3?) maps when (or if?) they are released.. I'm still waiting for an email reply? Fingers crossed..

Our customers get the disc. Afterall, they're charged for it.

As for Version 3, last I phoned up about it, VW said that the customer should purchase the disc in much the same fashion they would if they had bought Version 3 to start with.

Sounds fair to me.. Update: I spoke to the dealer yesterday (via phone) who said he would look for my disk(s) and let me know when he finds them so I can pick them up. Excellent! That's good news for me. I believe it's important in today's high tech environment that the end user (i.e. me!) be given both hardware AND software.

I can understand that new customers purchasing a complete new RNS510 system, to be fitted into a car post factory, should pay full price, however existing customers should not. Or, at least they should only pay a very small fee for the updated software, particularly if the new car purchased had old software to start with. Anyway, spoke to the dealer yesterday who advised me that they will provide me with the new software (Version 3) "free of charge" when VW release it, even if VW charge others for it or not. The reason for this offer has something to do with my new car (along with all current new VW's from this dealer) has very old RNS510 software/data (Version 1, I think). The dealer did advise that he still did not know when VW will release Version 3.

I realise this thread is somewhat cold but I am keen to hear if anyone else has recently bought a Tiguan and is having "fun" with the RNS510 maps/software?

I picked up my car 24th May and had problems straight away with the mechatronix and RNS510. The nav system did not seem to have the correct maps and took us to very weird locations, not the one's we'd programmed. It also showed incorrect speed limits e.g. 120kph on a 11kph tollway. Anyway the car had to go back to the dealers and they re-loaded the unit. When I got the car back it no loner shows any speed limits.

I had the car checked over by a dealer today and everything tested fine. I was told that speed zones are a new feature and have just been added in, and further that not all speed zones are currently included. The dealer did tell me that a new upgrade is expected in about 6 months time and this should include a complete set of speed zones.

Has anyone else experienced the same issues? Has anyone else managed to get speed zones to work with the current software?

My RNS510 is a year old and no speed zone. It's a feature I'd live to have as well as updated maps. I'm guessing VW will charge for the update. How much do you think?

ropes ... sounds like dealer reverted back to an older map.

Only the current map shows speed limits (even though wrong speed).
But at least has a more up to date (but still old) Sensis map.

You should check which version has been loaded on your RNS510. Current version is CD_7679

But I would suggest your complaint about wrong speed limits has actually cost you the loss of all speed limits and the latest Australian map available.

Yep you are correct it did cost me the speed limits. I took the car to another branch of the same dealer and they reckon the map is the current version, but I don't agree it looks different. They did tell me that my unit will be updated for free when I take it for service. And after a bun fight with the dealer I bought the car from, they have finally ordered me the software disk. I suspect they got told to give it to me as I they could not make me drop the issue and I had VW on their back. My question is, what did they do with the original disk that should have come with the unit????

The dealer reckons that they will upgrade the software at the time of service and it is free for those of us who has the RNS510 as OEM install or dealer fitted. I was told to simply ask for the software to be upgraded when I drop it in for service. According to this guy, updates are normally released at 6 month intervals. But I can't confirm this as my car is very new.

You can update the firmware yourself as described here:

You might need to reload the maps after. So you'd need the disk for that. Make sure your battery has a full charge as it takes about 60-90 minutes.

Got a final answer on my software disk. According to the dealer VW does not ship the disks with the vehicle as most owners do not want the disk. They will, however supply the disk if an owner requests a copy. My disk is to be sent to me by courier this week. So you beauty! I get the power to set the unit up how I want. So in this instance it pays to push dealers to give you the disk.
