  • Getting TV to work for RNS 510

Hi all, I have been having a good play with my RNS510 unit in my brand new Passat CC. I have worked out how to play videos, rip mp3 tracks to the 30gb drive and tune the system.

One intriguing thing that I noticed is that when I play a DVD, there is a tab marked "TV" which is a grayed out option. The manual confirms that a TV tuner can be fitted (presumably as an optional extra) although the Australian brochure that I have does not confirm this to be an option in Australia.

So the question I have is a simple one: has anyone worked out how to get TV to work through the RNS510 in Australia? If so, how did you do it?

there is an oem tv module for vw but avaliable only in europe. the oem tv tuner system plugs into the rvc system which then has the cable going to the back of the rns 510. have a look at erwin rvc documents, it tells a lot. else just get an aftermarket system but you will have to be sure it will work with the rvc as it plugs into thw same port on the rns 510. the below is a possible example with diversity antennas

So looks like another thing that is in the too hard basket then?

The more that I read the owner's manual the more that I realise that there are actually quite a few options that Australia simply doesn't get. Kessy Keyless entry is another one I noticed as well (not that I would have bothered with it though, though the tv would have been nice...)

Anyone succesfully installed TV to their RNS 510 in Oz?

actually it is not too difficult if you already have the rvc in place leagle. I am lead to believe that all you need to do is locate the rvc control box & run the tv tuner signal onto it you don;t need to wire it all over the car just need to take off the boot lining on the right to have a look to see if the connections are there

You said you figured out how to play Video's, was this just standard DVD's? I am wondering how I can RIP movies to the HDD?

I've already responded to Big T via PM but just for the benefit of everyone else: I can only play DVDs on the RNS510. I.E I can't rip movies onto the Hard Drive.

However ... this is a little off topic, but thru my Kufatec Blue Tooth, I can watch movies on my iphone and the sounds stream through the car speakers. This should also work for a paired 3G ipad (though have not tried that yet).

Hopefully VW teams up with Apple one day and comes up with an RNS510 that syncs with the iphone and lets you upload other media including movies and photos! That would be great! (Wouldn't hold my breath though....)

Wonder if my local VW dealership will do this for me though?

my VW dealer said they would fit it as long as it was the OEM component etc... :S

I wonder how many PM's you will get now asking 'how much for the RNS 510'

Have you worked out the tv function yet? There is a way to put the DVD player into a diagnostic mode and make it play while the vehicle is in motion, or you could buy Motordiag RNS 510 manager which switches the video playback in motion limitation off. The USB interface cable and software costs 499 euro and ships worldwide. i just purchased a skoda superb and am considering attempting this and am also keen to get digital tv in my car.
