I was told by my dealer, the only way to find out what version you have is to take it in to them, they then plug it into their computers etc and it'll tell them what they (and you) need to know.

I have a GOLF MK6 TSI 118 with the "simple" $795 bluetooth audio and the RNS-510 installed at the dealer.
What I want to know, is will installed the 2660 firmware:
        a) Automatically work with my bluetooth mic/audio without me needing to do anything hardware like?
        b) Brick my unit
        c) come under warranter if I brick it or reversible?
        d) will only work under certain conditions?

Is there an idiots guide to doing this. By idiots, I mean a step by step to make sure you know what version/hardware you have, etc etc...
P.S. why do my V2 maps suck? I go on long country road drives and suddenly end up on "offroad" where there should be a massive highway!
Gripe #2: Prediction of Arrival time is WAY off. I think it calculates is at 60KM/h rather than your current speed. I've seen some $300 navmans that do more then this RNS-510,

I have the same setup only in a Tiguan. i upgraded to 2660 myself and ended up with a perfectly working unit. As for bricking the unit, there is always a remote chance and no "idiots guide" will quarantee a faultless upgrade.

AS for the maps, yes they are simple to say the least. I have already regreted the purchase of the RNS510. It will be my last.
I have a Golf that I drive in germany when I go over to see my family once a year and they too have the RNS510. Over there it knows exactly what speed you need to be doing and it will tell you almost exactly what time you will arrive at your destination. On top of that, the unit utilizes the traffic updates and routes you away from slow spots such as road works or traffic jams.

          Happy motoring...

The lack of traffic updates isn't a VW issues but a government issue for funding the idiots at Suna who are incompetent at best with their useless implementation of the TDS service. Not only do you have to buy a brand new Volkswagen with an RNS 510 to use the service (if Volkswagen offered it which they don't and IIRC only one manufacturer does) as they do not allow you to add the service on or pay a subscription to use it. Their business model is based on selling the service with hardware with a one off fee.

As for the maps once again this is a government issue with the Telstra owned Sensis being incompetent beyond belief and it comes back to Australia having a private company owning rights to mapping and expecting a license fee per user plus you have sensis provide "enhanced" maps to Volkswagen who also charge a licence fee per user and on top of this you have multiple one off fees each year and of course the per user fees each year.

License for maps from MapData Pty Ltd. Google would have released it's free navigation software by now in Australia as they have enhanced all the maps substantially but they won't because of the cost and they believe that mapping data should be free as it's owned by the people. Their navigation software and maps are free in the USA but they also have similar problems in Europe.

Volkswagen can only provide what they have to work with, they don't sell a lot of Sat Nav units in Australia and they get screwed by Telstra/Sensis and others for rubbish data.
