  • Sub box help please :)

    Hey guys,
Thinking of making a new box for my sub that will fit in with the contours of my boot more so than the big ugly cube I have at the moment If i build a box to the same volume but a different shape will this affect the sound much?

    Cheers
    Simon

Nope not at all... only need have readjust the amp. What size is your sub?? Are you thinking of porting or enclosed?

Here are some on my work for inspiration.
If you need Fiber glass let me know. I still have load.

It's a 10" JL Louis. The first pic is exactly how I want to do mine! Need to get the big ass cube outta the way so I can actually carry things in the boot LOL. Thanks Louis

10" would be fine just like the first one. If you are not looking for breaking SPL records, that space will work just fine.
have I mentioned fiberglassforums.com to you.. if you are looking into fiberglassing. They are really helpful.

Any sort of material you use try to keep air leaks to minimal, especially at the mounting surface, otherwise you will get ugly farting sound.

Thanks Louis, probably going to use MDF, I like it's sound qualities Probably much harder to work with in that shape but i'll see how it goes.

There's enough farting in general without making my stereo do it also

I think I used 12mm MDF for the face piece, hardest part would probably be cutting to conform to the shape of the boot, a piece of foam and cutter to trace put the shape, possibly much more work. Nevertheless, have fun and be creative.

make a mould out of fibregass to utilise teh space you have to its maximum potential, the curves of the inside of your boot will give it the strength it needs

also check out the MEA forums, heaps and heaps of info on there as well of some build threads to give you some inpiration http://www.mobileelectronics.com.au/

              cheers, dan

It will effect the sound depending on what kind of box you have now. The effect wont be dramatic though.

Yeah mine sounds great aswell, better than it did in the box I got it with which was suited to the sub! Time for a better sub soon though I reckon!

My sub is a decent one, JL 10". Not really that fussed if I lose a little (and i stress a little) quality, just want more boot space!!!
