  • How do I activate Phone and Star Buttons on my mk5 Golf? (RNS and 9W7 installed)

    Hi all,

I've searched high and low across the forums for an answer but no luck so I'm sorry if this has been answered already.

I have an RNS510 (with Star button for voice control) and 9W7 VW bluetooth installed, I'm streaming music via bluetooth from my iPhone and it's great.

But on my multifunction steering wheel the "phone" button does nothing when I'd expect it to allow me to answer and then end a phone call, and the "star" button on the steering wheel acts as a mute button while it should allow me to activate voice control.

Also when I press the "star" button on the RNS the RNS speaks to me but when I speak it doesn't hear me, why is this?

What do I need to do in VCDS to make all these functions work?

I have a genuine VCDS cable but I'm a complete nubie so I'm very hesitant to change any settings without expert advise from you experienced dubbers.

    Any help is much appreciated.

    Alan.

It depends on the wiring kit installed. There are different ways depending on the kit to get them to work. This caused me some confusion when I helped set up a kit for someone.

        Hiya

I have EXACTLY the same issue with my 2 week old RNS510 & the 9W7!

But, I do have all the phone menus, address book etc - plus access to those details via my MFSW.

But the voice control unit either can't hear me (uses another mic in some cases evidently), or its just ****e!

Star button on the MFSW only acts as a mute button, and the star button on the RNS510 activates the useless voice control.

        Perplexing...

Ha! I'd be interested in the answer to this too. I have a Mk5 Golf that's not behaving correctly.

I have a Pioneer head unit and the Phone button allows me to hang up a call but not answer one (so some code is coming out of the button) and the star button mutes the radio.

I am about to encounter this on my brand new Tiguan too. I put the RNS-510 in over the weekend and the star button is not responding to anything (it's in the headlining) and the mouth/microphone button only mutes the radio.

            Yeah, bloody annoying.

My star button mutes when in theory you'd expect it to activate the voice command feature on the RNS.

And the phone button on the steering wheel, well, what are we supposed to assume it's for lol.

There has to be a way to make this work for our mk5's !!!

I've added the same bluetooth kit to my 08 passat with rcd510. The star button works as a radio mute and the phone button does nothing. My car has the red MFD which I believe is not fully compatible with that bluetooth kit, so I get no phone on MFD. As for voice control on a retrofitted RNS, you need to tap into the bluetooth microphone and run 2 wires from it into the back of the radio. I don't remember pin numbers but doing this will fix it. I have done this to a couple of cars.

Found this thread via Google and thought I would register to solve this problem for you guys.

You HAVE to recode the CAN gateway to enable telephone AND recode the steering wheel controller for push to talk for the star and phone buttons to work with phone functions.

With default coding, as you know, the star button mutes the stereo, and the phone button does nothing. With it coded for telephone, the star button starts voice control, and the phone button answers/hangs up calls.

                Look here: http://www.fiscon-mobile.eu/support/...scon_vw_en.pdf

Start at page 8 - this is for an aftermarket phone module, but the programming is the same for OEM modules.

Awesome. That's perfect. I will give this a go as I code in my new Climatronic module!

To clarify, coding the CAN gateway for phone is what adds the phone menu to the MFD, and coding the steering wheel controller for push to talk is what makes the star and phone buttons talk to the phone controller instead of the radio. So if you want to use a bluetooth module but still want the star button to mute your radio, you can choose to code only the CAN gateway.

The BT mic also needs to be plugged into the 'mic in' on the RNS, then from the RNS 'mic out' this needs to be cabled to the mic pins in the 9W7 module.
If you got a decent kit, there should be a removable connector on the 9w7 wiring harness that allows you to choose between having the mic wired to the BT unit directly, or piggy-backed via the head unit.

I don't have the wiring harness I just bought the module I thought the harness that's used for the bt kit I have in the car now would work with the 9W7 but looks like not..

You can either buy a harness or modify your own to add the connections to the Mic in/out pins.
