Hit me up peeps if you want.
The 2e pistons are different to the aba I believe.
Yeah you need the 2L belt Pete.

Hmm 16v.. The more you talk, the more money i can see you spending, Pete.
16v's are expensive to build. Stupid extra valves.
Hahaha , First I'll figure out what I want, then I'll figure out what I can afford.
Still need figure out what I'm doing racing wise, don't want to build myself out of a class, or into a heavy metal class.
Forced induction would be a heaps of fun but because CAMS multiplies your engine capacity by 1.7 to work out which class you belong in - it means you could be on the track with Commodores and Falcons if you start off with a 2.0L. I'd rather not mix it with the heavy metal just yet.
So NA 2.0 or 1.8 seems like a nice option. The 2.0s are considered slow by the MK 3 owners but seem a popular choice in the UK for the MK 1s. I'd like to know more about why they're considered slow. Weight? FI? Stroke?
It seems to be raining 8v 2.0 Litres lately, they're cheap and there's plenty of 'em so they're probably not a bad basis for a project as parts should be readily available. They've also generaly not got too many miles on them.
For now I'll do a quick fix on the GX and save up for my trip to the US.
They're only perceived as slow because the VR6 is such a screamer, if the MK3 was only available as an 8v it would just be called normal. Despite the fact that they would go faster than any non turbo MKIV due to the weight difference.
Its not that slow mind you, compare a 2.slow to a fiesta XR4 (apparently fast) which does around the 8.8-9.2 second mark to 100 with a 1/4 mile time of around 15.8-16.0 seconds, now compare that to the 2.slow which does around 10.0-10.6 to 100 with a 1/4 mile of around 16.7. So I honestly have to say that the 2.slow does rather well compared to this rather luke warm "hot hatch".
Compare the two in a race at the lights or even over distance the difference might be 1.5 car lengths or nothing at all if the XR4 driver isn't all that great. So as with everything, its got to do more with the perception something has in its own context rather than how well it actually performs. I'd just go for a chipped 1.8t with a zorst tbh, but again you have to stick with the NA's to have a chance anyway...
I've found some good info now around ABA vs 2E/AGG engines.
Looks like 2E with an ABA head is actually a good combination as it gives you a CR of about 10:1. I'm leaning towards this approach for the project motor.
Meanwhile the short term 2E with a Kjet GX head project looks like a go'er.
