  • Rev limiters on MK3 8V's

Hey everyone, just wondering what people have found to be the rev limiters on their MK3's. Mines at a flat 5,000 and at first I thought there wasn't a problem but until I started looking at a few other cars here and overseas, it doesn't seem that 5,000 isn't always the case. It seems to vary from 5,000 to 5,400 to even close to 7,000

Is this a normal thing; or does VW have different versions of the same engine; or worse yet there is a problem with my car I've heard things about cars going into "limp mode" and not kicking past 5,000, although I hope that isn't the case. The car is a 1998 Golf 2E 2.0L by the way.

Your thoughts and experiences will be appreciated

Some models have a rev limiter built into the fuel pump relay. They can be changed for non-limiting type. Usually the RPM limit is printed on the side of the relay.

my 8v used to cut out at aroud 5

but then i installed a lumpy cam, it took it all the way to 6500 safely without a bounc before i back off...then my head gasket exploded power was there as well, through the whole rev

5000 is too low. Timing is probably out. It should be 5800 with the later 2Ls 6200 with the early ones.

yeah 5k is 2 low you got a problem some where, could be the timing if someone has been playing with it or you've had the t belt changed and not set right. also could be fueling . get it checked out.

Ive never hit the limiter in mine, 94 (2E i think). I am sure that it has been close to 5700 though, only once....there is not real point anyway

Yeah I can get mine to 6000+, ADY engine code which is what you should have too!

The general consensus in there has been a defective coil - did you recently replace yours?

Yeah I did change the coil recently, the limiter is still at 5 flat. I think the timing might me be out the belt was changed when I first got the car like... 30 months ago they did the job at Midas

But I knew very little about VW's back then, and they did a decent job on the clutch and other parts so I can' bag them out to much. I've been complaining about the limiter and such for a while. And I remember Ray's car being faster than mine (maybe I just suck haha)

And to think I was looking for a performance chip to move the limiter up hahaha oh dear, thanks guys

Now I finally have an excuse to get that wobbly cam and ported head I was after

My MK 2 K-Jet 1800 revs clean off the tacho and into the fuel gague! (7K rpm +)

My MK 3 1800 has seen the wrong side of 6200 rpm as well, but it's running a DGAV Weber so there's nothing to stop it except common sense.

                            Just alittle info,

Some K-Basic sytem's still have a rev limiter incl. my 83 GTI. It's built into the rotor button in the distributor.

Early BMW's have this system as well. It's a pretty nifty setup. Basically uses centrifugal force applied to a predetermined spring load which create's a dead short through the dizzy shaft.

I've seen those in type 4 Kombis too. (Usually disabled).
