  • APR tune price hike

I went in to enquire about tuning my Golf R with stage one last month and was quoted $1650 which i accepted and said id save up and wait for next month. That has rolled along and when i went in they told me price has now increased by $350 !!

Yep thats right its now a ridiculous $2k to tune your car. When asked why he said because it was become so popular which is not a good reason at all. I know its because of the US dollar but that it still a crazy hike.

Same gains can be achieved with Eurodynes tune which is approx $1100 delivered here to Australia. With this tune you can take it off and put on yourself.

Or you could get change from $1000 and have over 200kw atw with DNA Tuning. The hand controller they provide (has since been updated from the photo in the link, the new controller is much nicer and colour screen etc) allows you to apply or remove the tune as you desire: http://www.vwwatercooled.com/forums/...ion-72668.html

      plenty of options besides APR.

To be fair, they do have to pay for their marketing and the licence fees back to APR USA.

+1 they spend a fair bit in advertising and local support for the dealer network is not cheap. Plus the exchange rate is not doing them any favours which is why the prices have gone up.

Maybe now they will have a sale at Christmas as previously they hadn't had one all year and the $1650 was essentially "sale" price given the exchange rate hit they've had.

That's such a rip off especially with all the other options out there.

Its purely based on the dollar drop sorry. We have been waiting for a miraculous AUD recovery but it has not happened.

Anyone who remembers back a bit, the price dropped by 15 % in June 2008 - then rose 15% in November 2008, and then in December 2010 it was reduced 20%.

This is the first rise since December 2010. It accurately reflects the change in the dollar.

Unfortunately people only remember the prices going up - there are no threads saying
"Wow, Look - APR reduced their prices by 15% AGAIN!"
            .

To be fair, APR Aust. do put a lot of R&D into what they sell locally, particularly their mapping.

You don't get that with a lot of cheaper tunes, which are mostly ex-UK and will probably put your car into limp mode on a nice hot day.

There's more to a tune than just the price

Its just disheartening cos there is no doubt its a good tune, I have it on my GTI without a problem for 4 years and I was looking forward to getting my new R done aswell. I was actually saving up for it but now it is out of reach and I need to go with a competitor.

Its a pity APR cant work independently of the US and agree a share of the profits sent back, this way APR could be more competitive in the market.

Consider how much you paid for your car, and its value to you. Now compare that to the cost of the APR tune, and the benefits you get from said tune.

You obviously subscribe to the benefits of the APR product (excellent R&D, extensive support/dealer network, high quality) - would you really want to save a few hundred dollars (up to $1k or so if you're considering the cheapest competitors)? Hold off on tuning, save a little longer, and do the job properly - that's certainly what I'd be doing in your position.

i've got no regrets spending the extra $$$ for an APR tune.

the apr tunes also come with additional programs, security lockout, anti-theft and FCE/TBA - which i believe the other tuners do not provide.

tis a shame about the price hike, but apr have no choice in that matter - its not in their control.
their products r still good and worth the price/wait.

                        I wouldn't call it a rip-off - it's just premium pricing.

They price to market and they are one of the most well known tunes available. Every noob asks about APR tunes.

Believe it or not, they aren't the most expensive out there.

                          Hoyhoy.

I have a 9N3 Polo GTI, purchased new in 2006, within 2 weeks had the APR stage-1 done, bloody good stuff.
Then in late 2007 I went a bit further, fitting a Ko4 turbo again with the APR tune to suit, not one thing has been touched since then as far engine mods are concerned, not a thing.
I will say that the Little Blue Girl does have plenty of supporting mods as well as water-meth which is for cooling only.
Now this is the only 9N3 Polo to this day to have achieved official times in the sub 1'10" @ Wakefield Park.
So would I use another tune, why would I, when ya on a winner.

Last time I've checked, the old saying "You always get what you've paid for", was still valid.
