Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • timing mark silly question

This will sound silly, one day I looked for a timing plate and looked upon a small 4lined thing that at the time didn't get attention because I just didn't know how, NOW when I look to use it I can't find it. In manuals the only reference is about marks on a wheel TDC but nowhere is it specifically described how to tune the van.
Just a hint on where to point the timing light pleeeease.

Should be a small mark on the inside edge of the harmonic balancer.

Once you've found it, mark it with a white paint pen.

I had to look that up. I guess that's the vicinity. If I find it is there another to match it too?

Yeah, there should be a corresponding mark in roughly the 12 o'clock postion, in relation to the crank pulley, on the bottom timing belt cover.
