  • Golf R Launch Control problem

    Hi all,

    I have a question about the launch control on my golf R.

    I purchased the 2011 stock Golf R MK6 for just about a month, it is stock. (not sure about now as it is with the specialist today for the ECU tune and high pressure fuel pump).

    Last night, first time in my life, I tried launch control after reading guides on the internet. However, It did not go as expected.....

    Lucky, I got two or three times success I assume. When I say success, I judge it purely by before launch, I was able to have the rev stabled at 3000 rpm before release the brake..

    But for a few times:

    1. I cannot have the rev pass 2000 rpm like what happened to the D mode.
    2. Or I also had a few times that the rev is not limited at all, I can rev it all the way to 6K rpm if I like but no feeling of power in at all, same like you put the gear in N and try to accelarate..

    The launch control process I followed was:

    1. Fully stop the car and hold the brake
    2. Change to S mode
    3. Change ACC to sport
    4. turn off the ESP
    5. push accelarate while hold brake to let rev reach about 3000 rpm
    6. release the brake while push the accelarate as deep as possible at the same time..

    So anyone could share me some idea about what happened to cause those situations. Or maybe something wrong with my car =.=!!

    I will ask the question later this afternoon as well when I pick up the car...

    that's strange how it works for u in some situations, but not in others.
    must be something not triggering right.

    i pretty much follow the same steps and works everytime:-
    1. stop car
    2. esp off
    3. shift into manual or sport mode
    4. with left foot on brake, apply throttle (don't floor it!) - should only rev upto 2500-3000 rpm
    5. foot off the brakes and off u go!!

      Make sure you have the brake pedal hard to the floor - the first time I tried LC it didn't work either, because I was only lightly holding the brake pedal (as you would if stopped at the lights). I can actually feel a slight change in pedal force when you reach the required pedal depth to activate LC.

        I'm not sure if this makes a difference or not but I've always switched off traction control before changing into S or M mode. The way you describe it is the other way around.

        Also I can have the foot to the floor on the accelerator while holding the brake no problems. The engine will just bounce off the rev limiter at 3,000RPM (or a bit higher if you have a DSG tune). You get a faster launch this way

            LC is recommended for every start by your DSG repairer as they need to buy another mansion.

              The ACC step is not required for launch control.

              Bear in mind that LC will only activate if several parameters are within fairly narrow ranges, including engine and gearbox oil temperature, water temperature, clutch temps, etc. From memory, on a Golf R the engine oil needs to be between 90-100 degrees (although best to search to verify these numbers).

              Repeated LC launches within a short timeframe will likely send one or several of these parameters above their prescribed thresholds.

                Thanks for all above replies folks.

                After checking with the guys who did the tune and fuel pump for me yesterday, It seems like for every LC, I need to re-deactivate the ESP (active and then deactivate). As also worrying about the clutch, I only tried twice last night. And both worked. Also as Jamesatfish mentioned, I did also noticed the deep brake is also needed.

                By th way, The car now runs beautiful like a smaill rocket with APR ECU tune stage 1+ and fuel pump. Second best money spent ever (First is on the Golf R)

                  In addition the hard Brake pedal pressure its worth noting that LC won't work if the car is on a slight incline.

                  Clutches are fine on all the cars we have modified to date and some have hundreds of launches under their belts. I've been expecting some of the cars with bigger turbos to cause a reduction in the lifespan of the clutch packs but it hasn't happened so far.

                  Oh here's stock launch control (stock launch RPM) being used but with an Antilag ECU file on a 2867GTX equipped Golf R. 10psi boost as you are launching.... no problems with a delay off the line here


                  You should see what happens if you launch at say 4500 rpm

                    Here's what happens when you launch at 4500rpm. Forgive the crappy iPhone video - we had 3 GoPros that day and forgot to do a single run with them in the Golf...

                      this method works for me 100% of the time

                      traction control off > put into "S" mode

                      no need to change the adaptive suspension at all
