The way I see it, the tune increases max power and torque, but the car will only put out as much power as you tell it.
At the end of the day, the amount you press the throttle puts in that much fuel and gets you the applicable distance.
Just because the car has more max power doesn't mean you'll use more fuel, unless you tell it to go faster..
I've been on bluefin for 10000km and it didn't make a difference to economy, but it has made me drive faster and care less about reds, coasting, accelerating slowly, etc.
For some tunes where ignition timing is modified you can actually make the engine produce a decent amount of torque (hence power) with no additional fuel usage. Hate to be a salesman but with our tunes we tend to add more than any of the other shelf tunes that I've seen so far and that's typically from about 30% load to red line not just the 100% area.
A typical shelf tune can't be allowed to do this to the same extent as it will vary from car to car and they can't logistically cater for this with various mods and a huge number of cars that they want to turn over etc but given the amounts of additional timing I know we can add with out any knock retard I still find it surprising that even some level 2 tunes don't modify the timing tables at all, they just add boost which is pretty lame and there is no chance of a measurable fuel saving. I'm talking the GTI and R/S3 engine here btw
You can also lock the AFRs so under load the mixtures aren't overly rich which the stock file will allow but a fuel saving here would only be measurable if you drove your car very hard all the time and there's only one customer that I know of that fits that description and he's very scary .....
My usage is all over the shop (in a 118TSI + APR Stage 1). Best is 6.8L/100km which would no doubt be a trip, but then it can also get over 12L/100... my long term average is 9.4L/100.
If I give it hell on the way to the train station in the morning 12+L/100 is easily possible, if I baby it 7L/100km is also pretty easy. My trip is lots of corners, round abouts and speed humps over a very short distance. I think if you drive any sort of distance the heavy right foot starts to even out, but for me there is just no "even out" time/distance and that's just about the only trips I do these days, the rest of the time I'm in the Van with the family.
If it has an engine or heartbeat it's going to cost you.
I was driving in super heavy traffic this morning, rarely left 2nd gear so I certainly wasn't accelerating hard or anything, average speed 9 kph and average consumption 18.8 L/100km. On a highway trip where my average is up around 70 kph my consumption gets down around 6L/100km. I've had real average values for a tank (based on amount filled and change in ODO) of between 6.7L/100km and 10L/100km depending on if the majority of that tank was city or highway driving.
My fuel economy improved about 1L/100klm driving the same routes in suburban driving. Highway driving it improved by up to 1.5L/100klm. Best result I got was 7.5L/100klms between Melb and Sydney cruising at 110km/h.
This was in a MKV Jetta 6DSG with APR tune to approx 180kW.
Its all about the way you drive it.
