Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled
After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.
Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before.
We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Is the machining that you mention the removal of the ring gear rivets and skimming the face of the ring gear before fitting?
I'm more interested in the landed cost which would seem to be about $2kResident grumpy old fart

Depends, as you know - there are differences in the ring year & also the mounting boss from Polo to Polo, so we had the extra machining done (we used a sample Polo diff & gave them the specs), hence the price. They also attract (at the time) 15% duty & GST, so you won't land it for 2k unless you do it illegally.

So your fitting charge must be ~$500, then? Might be worth a (long) drive up...
I know about the stupid 113/114mm ring gear diameter variation - how does the mounting boss vary?Resident grumpy old fart

SQS make diffs, we have used them before & they are good, we now use VWR versions as we have more say in the specifications we require. We have gone more towards using 2 way versions now (with heavy ramp on the deceleration) than one way, and as mentioned before, we can have a choice of plate materials.
Mounting bosses vary on the ID.
We don't do retail installations here - they are done @ Prestige & Performance in Coorparoo - about 100 metres from our workshop, you would need to contact them regarding installation costs!

Thanks for the info, Guy. I may have to get divorced to get a VWR LSD but at least I know it's there!
Just for everyone's info, here is a description of the 'plate' type LSD that is being mentioned (I've always heard of it as the 'Salisbury' or 'Clutch Pack')Resident grumpy old fart

I know it's an old post, but if you want a plate/clutch, Kaaz do 020 and 02J centres at pretty reasonable prices for an extremely well built unit - sub $1500 landed. In regards to plate vs ATB/helical, I am a big fan of the Quaife and Wavetrac units. The traction increase is very noticeable and they are very well mannered for parking etc. Unless you're lifting driven wheels all the time in an extreme track machine I reckon the helical style options are all good!
And MFactory do indeed seem to have plate options for the 02M 6-speed as of 2014.Specialised Gearbox and Differential Repairs and Upgrades

Hi there
I'd like to understand a bit more about the VWR diffs - do they/will they fit and work with a 2009 VW R36 wagon?
Or is this a waste of time?

If you are ever in Brisbane, you need to drive our new MK6 GTI stage 3+ DSG - It has a VWR diff in it (plate) and its perfectly mannered on the street. Took about 1000km's for the plates to bed in.
The VWR differentials are just on $3000, but personally they are 10 x better than a TBD.2009 R36 Variant - Icelandic Grey - HALDEX Gen 4 Controller - SuperChips Tune - CAI - Full LED Install - OZ Racing Vittoria 18x8 wheels - VWR BBK & VWR 2 Piece Rear Rotors - KW V3 Coilovers - KR Sway Bars - CPC DSG Tune - Carbon Fibre Front Grill - SprintBooster - DynAudio Upgrade - Tinted Rear Lights - etc, etc...
