Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

George my buildup thread has all of the dyno readouts on the last page or second last. Sorry don't have them on me right now. But you can check there. The previous dyno was voided which was the Canberra run, because I can feel a hell of a lot more than 2kws I can tell you that!

I'm glad you know it was a joke the 14kws ray! The chip help with the other mods! By this I'm saying that against a stock vr6 (now understand STOCK VR6) from that I gained 14kw at the wheels, this was run one after the other!

you probably got something around 10-15hp and thats got alot to do with the increase in the rev limiter most probably, but 800 for vr6 chip? Thats an awful lot considering nuespeed and other brand chips are no more than 150 or so US. I'm guessing that does have some value as well, but I believe the amount you spent was more labour cost than anything else, so I guess you did alright anyway

Here are the instructions for fitting that ebay chip for a mk3, its the same as a VR6 of the same age. The older cars >96 are just a simple removal with a chip removal tool and don't require soldering.

I would not trust ebay chips! Don't forget the Neuspeed ones are not for Australia, you look at the ones in the US they are so cheap, but they will not fit our cars different codes! I know that Powerchip do it as well and last time I checked in May for one they were asking for $650 with the same sought of power gains! The reason I went for GIAC was because my car would have performed better with the cams and port and polishing!

And its got nothing to do with increasing the rev limiter, they still dyno'd the cars to 6500rpms!

Fair enough, but as I was doing some reaseach on chips for the mk3's the prices were around the 100 buck mark, and considering these chips were priced at that before it doesn't seem bad. An yeah US dubs are quite different to our own. Well do whatever suits the car, if had gone to the legnth you had with your car I'd have found something that would have suited the mods better and would have paid more.

But it would take me months to save 650 bucks for anything let alone a chip or tuning. Thats why I prefer asthetic and DIY modifications more than anything else, since I just don't earn enough for any modifications let alone purchase another car...

Has the rev limter moved at all? Or is it just the stock one?

Thats cool dude, I'm going for both and I'm struggling at the moment money tree is dead, need to find a new one

As for the rev limiter with a chip it extends it to 7300rpm but its not recommended to hit that every time!

Still I only take it to 6250rpm then change whenever I'm feeling adventurous

Dont forget the stock 2E doesnt make power past 5500

If ur willing to tackle wiring urself an unassembled megasquirt kit is only $250USD and gives u full standalone! After looking around i think this will be the path i go down when i get my money tree sorted

                Chips in WA

There is a guy here in Perth who was involved with a chipping company in the UK that was appointed as the official Volkswagen Racing UK Tuning Partner. He's brought the technology to Australia and started a company in Perth. I'm going to track him down to get more info off him and let you all know.

Hmnn fair enough, 7300 is quite high too its good to see that you got your money's worth though and you have some degree of self control, unlike some of us: bong (*rev limiter* bounce bounce bounce) !

Apparently with most of the chips with the 2.slow, they push the rev limiter to 6500!!! And your absolutely correct mr peed, they stop making power past 5550 or therebouts. But still ... AUS$71, worst case scenario i'll just take it out and put the stocker back in and ebay it back for 50 bucks.

Whats this megasquirt business? Sounds intriguing! The 256' cam continues to taunt me as well, I'll make a thread on it.

And I look forward to what you can find out rocco, I believe it will be of interest to everyone on this forum.

Megasquirt is a full standalone system except it comes in a kit format so u have to solder the circuit board together. You can buy it pre-assembled but it costs like twice as much, there are heaps of threads on vortex about it.

That mega squirt system looks fantastic! Thats realy realy realy realy cool...
Its not the price that bothers me about it though, its the amount of time required to spend on it thats a bit disturbing. I'd go for that if I was rebuilding the engine from scratch or, making some turbo monster but it doesn't seem to do justice for the possible gain over the amount of time its gonna take to build.

I mean mr peed, your going to be modifying cams, and valves and doing head porting so its seems like the best way to maximise power from the motor, and the right way to go The amount of user participation and modification is astonishing I've always dreamt of being to able to manipulate my car's engine just with a computer program and having a laptop stored in car! And this looks like the definate way of doing it. But I'm going to stick with the car as it is, I'd rather just save up for a mk4 GTi or audi A4 Quattro 1.8T and fiddle with that or a holiday to be honest
