Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • GOLF R TUNE by EVOLVE TECHNIK

Hey guys, I didn't want this to get lost in all the 200+ pages of Golf R observations..

I contacted EVOLVE today and spoke to a pretty good guy, Peter. (apparently has been into racing Porsches for 30 years).

His DD is a 335i and his wife has a chipped JETTA!

I noticed in the MOTOR magazine he did some work so gave him a call, cause his adverts don't have specific figures for the R.

Some low down for this interested:

    -232KWs
    -440nm torque
-$15000 warranty for issues caused by tune such as engine failure etc that VW warranty won't cover you for
    -done overnight
-pretty exxy but seems ok for what you get with the warranty ($1800)
-TUV approved (apparently this is a rating that all modded cars in Germany need to have in order to be road worthy, after modifications, apparently a reason some tuners won't/cant sell there.)

Interesting alternative to the GIAC, APR, SUPERCHIPS..

Any GOLF R owners have any experience with this brand?

Peter doesn't just use dyno figures he also backs his mods with a run or two on the VBOX.

He had a GOLF R in manual, that stock ran a 6.4 to the ton, and after the flash, air intake, TBE and intercooler he managed a 5.8sec 0-100. Pretty good for a manual version.

Yeah they have been around for ages. They are a good, just go with whichever tuner you feel comfortable with and location between you and the dealer is very important too.

Make sure you take up the offer on the VBOX once before at stock and then afterwards to get a real idea of the performance gains.

    Hope this helps

You cant really compare DSG 0-100 times to the manual...I dont care who tuned it.

        Hey,

TBE = turbo back exhaust. In other words a full exhaust system nohe just the back or the front or the middle only done.

        They look alright hey? (Evolve)

If I didn't already have a GIAC tune, this is what I would be going with. Evolve is highly recommended.

Your choice, one tuner in his Brisbane backyard with no real world experience or outstanding proven results to show for himself, or a highly regarded and respected member of the Australian racing community?

Evolve are quite good from what I have heard from a close friend, he had an Evolve tuned 335i which never skipped a beat and always spoke very highly of them

Which ever route you go with I have no doubt you will be happy, the tune will completely transform your car. Having met both Lucas (GIAC) and Peter Fitzgerald (Evolve) last weekend, if you choose either of those products I have no doubt you will be blown away by the product and service provided by these 2 businesses.

This last weekend, both of these gentlemen really went out of their ways to help out a complete random who was in trouble, when others were'nt interested (literally drove past twice with out stopping). Should my car be repaired I will be ensuring either one of these workshops will recieve the work

Having only driven a car with GIAC I can only comment on that product and the gains in torque and power were very impressive to say the least, given Peter's (Evolve) strive to ensure his customers are 100% satisfied with the product I am positive his product would also deliver impressive outcomes. I have driven a car with the other popular brand of tune (which I wont name to avoid any tuner wars) and I can honestly say, while the car was definately faster than stock (judged by watching the speedo), the way in which the car made its power failed to blow me away and the seat of pants register resulted in that product being crossed off the list.

Ignore the marketing propaganda of some and their merry band of followers, go and talk to some people in the know and make an informed decision by giving the business to the person you feel you are most comfortable with.

Hey guys, great to see we havent resorted to any shaming of other tuning companies.

Please keep it that way, cause I opened this thread cause I am genuinely interested in the replies!!

And DeanCorp, I reckon he does mean @the wheels.. TBE and STG 1 making 202KW at the wheels is mighty impressive.. but lets take that to the OBSERVATION section please!

So far, a couple of happy GIAC owners which is awesome.. any EVOLVE people?

And yep, Peter Fitzgerald is the guy I was talking to.

I take it from all the "Tuner Wars" and discussion on dyno variations that there is no definitive comparison between tunes?
by that, i mean data that shows before and after dyno's, 0-100, &/or quarter mile times for each tune that can be properly compared.
It seems that the quoted figures from tuners are to be taken with a grain of salt (or 2), but there are also huge differences in the dyno charts put up by people who have had the same tunes done.... so it's making it very confusing to choose who to go with.

Basically, if you're reading posts from someone who is trying with all their heart and might to defend their overpriced tune to the point of making wildly inaccurate claims involving GPS timing boxes don't pick that tune.

I think the thing people need to focus on is the driving experiance, if a car pulls a smaller number on the dyno than expected but has awesome drivability and raises more of a smile what more do you want?

It has been said a million times, there are too many variables with dyno's and their primary purpose is as a tuning tool and not a bragging tool. Dyno the same car before and after making changes on the same dyno, with the same operator, etc and if you see a reasonable improvements your laughing. Who gives a **** if someone pulls another 5 or 10KW peak? look at the area under the curve and if yours is greater ultimately you will have a quicker car.

As others have said, some of the 0-100 times floating around are fairly questionable, but there is no point badgering people over it, if they want to live with the dilusion that there very mildly modded Golf .:R is equally as quick at the lights as big dollar super cars let them live in la la land (The first Lambo, Ferrari or Porsche they try and run will bring them back down to earth).
