  • Do big downpipes make your exhaust noisy?

    Hey Guys,
Thinking of getting a bigger downpipe and maybe a hi-flow cat put on the Tiguan and was wondering if it would make the exhaust noisier? Any input from those that have done it on a GTi etc would be welcomed

    Cheers

It shouldn't make a noticeable difference since you would still have a muffler and stock tip's wouldn't you?

The downpipe is apparently the most restrictive part of the engine outlet so you would see a small power gain from it.
The high-flow cat should also provide a small gain in power but not as much as the restrive downpipe upgrade.

Yeah pretty sure I'll just change the downpipe and cat and leave the rest stock. I don't want a freeway droner.

      Thanks for the info.

I have heard a few Polos with big downpipes, a little bit gruffer from the outside but you wouldn't know the pipe was there driving them.

VW systems in my experience are a pretty good compromise for noise and power.

Maybe my missus can get me one instead of a wedding ring?

Get her a piston ring instead lol.

Jokes aside, what downpipe and catback are you looking at?
              I assume it's APR.

Downpipe & highflow cat on my GTI made 13kw atw difference ...... it is a big performance improvement. 2nd only to the ECU upgrade .....

It does make a quite noticable difference to the sound ... deeper and slightly louder ... its great ... a Tig could do with that sound improvement ...

No APR unit available as yet for the Tiguans...... its all about demand and supply and last time I spoke to Guy (2 weeks ago) he has had only 2 enquiries .... mine and clip's ...... so you would be 3 .... and its quite expensive to prototype ....

Honestly I don't see it happening from their side soon, so you will have to go to a specialist exhaust shop I believe .... at a push I can tell you where to go in Brisbane, as my GTI's was done aftermarket by a specialist.

Good thing though, if you get it done elsewhere APR has the software ready for it already ....

Hong has a custom 3" DP to a AWE catback exhaust and when cruising i'm pretty confident to say that it is more quiet than my stock r32 exhaust with flapper mod.

i'd say that the turbo muffles a lot of the exhaust noise as well, but i was quite surprised at how quiet it was when he took me for a drive last weekend.

give it some stick, and its a different story

My experience is for the polo as well.

I went from 2 1/4 to 2 1/2 inch, and the extra diameter made the low end and idle louder and helped the power a little. its not loud, I don't want people to noice my car from the exhaust (unless I'm pulling hard, then its the turbo they hear). From a lot of reading, 2.5" is good upto about 200kw (so for the little 1.8, no need to go bigger).

IMO, you don't need to pay for a branded one, just go to a recommended shop. Afterall its just a pipe.

For me the APR was about $1000, recommended shop did it for a third of that and looks clean.
