What about a set of R spec tires? Easy to overlook but its the only surface that's on the road after all!

Righto, well CF bonnets are illegal as they shatter instead of crumple. And if no one makes them in AUS then it doesn't matter. I personally wouldn't risk my insurance with one.

More importantly, they're incredibly rigid, and when they do fail, they crack and splinter, and a stiff bonnet or those splinters (which are very sharp) would potentially make a mess of a pedestrian.

There are some CF-looking bonnets around, where they're largely fibreglass with a layer of CF (or something that looks like CF) in them, but they're nowhere near as light as true CF bonnets, and probably save very little weight overall.

The Mk4 R32 didn't even come with a space saver spare IIRC. I'm kinda surprised they bothered with the R32. But they do weigh enough to make a difference if you remove them, I'm considering removing mine from my Bora and replacing it with a can of tyre goo and a compressor.

Ahhh no, they aren't illegal.
They just have to be ADR approved.


There is no real loss of weight in carbon hood's anyway, most you would see would be about 4kg.
You would get heaps more weight loss from using low weight wheels, removing the rear seats and removing the spare.

I was thinking of doing the same thing, as the space saver is still approx. 12kg i believe, and if i took it out it would make up for the sub .

The tyre shops may get pissed off and refuse to get the goo out of the tyre or just say you need a new one. I've also heard that it weakens the tyre inside, not sure how true that is.

Cool.. I don't think 4kg is much of a saving and most people would get one just for looks (albeit carbon looking at least). It's still a pretty ricey mod..

Anyway a turbo kit is hardly a 'mild' upgrade - people should consider a car with a turbo already (ie S3) if that's what they want, better modability and wouldn't be throwing away as much money.
