  • What is the difference between 96Kw & 128Kw 2.5 TDI Vans ??..

    Hi All,
I have been searching through these pages to research the difference between the 96Kw & 128Kw 2.5 TDI Transporter vans. I am currently looking at buying a '06 96Kw 2.5ltr TDI Transporter as a upgrade for the family as the kids get bigger. I have reading all about the different model variants (which is a few) and can't seem to find any reference to the output difference between the two motors. From what I can see they are the same motor both 2.5ltr TDI but one has a higher output rating than the other.

Is the differnce an actual mechanical difference in the motor/driveline or is it all in the ECU/tunning side. If it is in the ECU does anyone know what is required to upgrade the 96kw to a 128Kw or more to the point can it be done?. If so who/where and rough cost.

Has anyone out there driven both that could give me an opinion of the difference, the reason I ask is it will be moving 2 Adults and 7 kids around the countryside with all the usual gear, from all the reading I have done the VW van is the way to go but I am still trying to find one to test drive.

Any and all knowledge or opinions would be greatly appreciated as I know very little about the VW side of the fence as I have not previously owned one.

    Kind Regards
    Vwnewby.

There are mechanical differences between these models, but also drivetrain differences. Different clutch, gearbox, diff ratio's & gear sets. So no, it's not just software!

We have modified dozens of these (both engine forms), there is a lot to consider before you purchase on what you will require total power wise (or more likely torque).

I have a 128kw & for the extra bucks I would go with the bigger output any day. I have towed 3 ton (braked) car trailer & car behind it up through the mountains & it was effortless. My friend following us in a V8 twin turbo TDI cruiser couldn't believe it!

You can see from graphs your expected modified outputs, 0-100 times etc.

    hopefully this will help out

I drove golf loons tdi van, i presume it has the larger motor as i was almost keeping up with his 20vt and had a friend in an e36 eating my dust..

not sure if this helps you but i have never before been in a van that i would describe as 'fast!'

0-100km/h times could include half a load 500KG plus a driver and fuel unless VW state otherwise.
