My understanding is the GIAC's are good but on some of the earlier models you need to have your ECU sent away for the chip to be soldered on
The earlier models are plug and play i.e. pre 96, the laters need a new chip housing welded onto the board and a chip put onto the housing, the new and old chips will then be interchangable. Any competant engineer or appliance techician can do this for you.
Unfortunately they do not have chips for our ECU's from the states, have a look at UK and other european states such as Germany or even belgium surprisingly as they have the same ECU's.
I'd personally love a VR6 with a ported head and a lumpy cam, but can't see the point unless I can get some reasonably priced programming for it, aka not 1k+ for the domestic stuff with around 5-8hp gain
& where is the ecu on a mk3, is it like the mk4 & in the firwall? or where
and is the ecu the same between a 1994 & 1995 vr6 & and will a chipped 1994 work in my 1995 car?
I have seen different ECUs amongst those model years. Some of the 94 ECUs have a different connector on the wiring loom compared to the 95s. Also 95 models have the immobiliser. So even if you have an ECU with the same part number the car wont start without matching the keys to it if you were to change it
You are wasting your money with a stock engine. You will get about 5Hp Gain for up to $1000 expense.
You`d get more gain from a podfilter and cutting the suitcase out of your muffler.

Thats just speculation . How could an open pod filter sucking in hot air make more power than an enclosed airbox taking air from the inner guard ?
Cutting the suitcase doesnt give a huge increase .
What you dont see is that the chip on its own wont give huge gains , but it will adapt better to a full exhaust and proper cold air intake than a stock chip will , not to mention better fuel economy and mid range torque !

ECU is behind firewall in engine bay. Should have a Bosch part number starting with 0261.
$450 not $1000. Brand New clearance stock.
Much better throttle response and better fuel econ. with better ignition curves through mid range
Have some Mk 4 GTI as well.
OK Mr Bugracer, what will a chip cost and what increase will I get with each level of mods?
Will you guarantee a certain HP increase or my money back?
Seems to me you are the first to discredit others opinions and the last to back up any of your "info" with hard facts.

arh yes that makes sence now
i didnt relise some of them didnt have immobilisers, that would be why my 94 will start with a simple metal key and my 95 will only start with the origanal

will pull out the ecu this w/e for the number.
also what brand is the chip?
and does anyone have any pics on what to take off to gain acsess just so i can have a heads up on whats involved

Firstly opinions are just that an opinion , they are usually based on assumptions . What kind of info would you like with hard facts ? What are you really searching for ???
What will a chip cost , well , I cant say due to the forum rules in regards to advertisers , I tried to advertise here and support the forum but it appears the business hasnt been established long enough , funny how a 5 year old business cant be a sponser cause it isnt "establised for long enough" ??? But thats another story .
Your chasing HP , youve been fooled in by advertising and media hype . As a mechanic you should see all the aspects of tuning not just what gives the most hp . Its ability to react to temperature change , elavation , humidity , heat , knock change , fuel , faulty sensors , load , lambda and adjust injector duty cycle and ignition timing . Each ecu has an adaption range and needs to be calibrated to suit the mods fitted . The better the initial tune the less calibration it needs . Thats how u make HP
As for guaranteeing a certain hp or your money back . Do you go to your doctor and asking him to give you a guarantee that your gonna live another year ? You cant expect every car to be the same . Figures that are posted are usually either the average or the maximum thats been achieved , it varies between chip companies .
Happy to answer questions , they need to be a bit more direct and less broad
