Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Here's a pic of the Bora too, it has no thread of it's own so it rates a mention here as the race support vehicle

Not 100% on whether it was because it stiffened the rear or because it put more weight in the back, making it a little more taily though.

It's always been there I used to tow my box trailer to the tip with it between race meets. CBF removing it or finding a set of good bumper brackets

It's a tow point because I just happened to have an eye bolt of the correct size to screw into the tongue mount and the welds on the factory tow point have snapped on one side.

              • You betcha!

Over the weekend I reset the tappet clearances and changed out the fuel filter.

Tomorrow it's off to the dyno for it's annual tune up.

This will be the first time on the dyno with the 306° cam. Curious to see the results.

                • woot! I'm curious too.

(i still wonder how streetable a 306 cam would be too )

                  • The cam would be the least of the problems with streeting the car.

It would need a stock clutch to make it driveable, and you'd soon get sick of the induction noise.

It's extremely loud even with a helmet on, I think I'll be wearing earplugs from now on.

Fuel economy might not be the best either

                    • The Dyno results are in and a little surprising.

Unfortunately their plotter wasn't working so I don't have a plot to post.

Incredibly after a year of racing and a change in cam the car was perfectly in tune!

Power is only slightly up at 83kw which I find odd as it certainly goes a lot harder since I put the new cam in.

Without the plot to compare to the previous cam I can only guess that the curve has changed a bit.

Bigger cam... Time for some more compression i'd say..

With that cam you'd want 12:1 or more to really make use of it i'd reckon. Maybe that's why you aren't making a heap more power?

                          • I got the cam cheap so I chucked it in to see what would happen

Next motor gets compression. Don't want to do any more development on this one.

Remember this is a stock, original 2.0 bottom end that cost me $50, there's only so far I can reasonably push it.

                              • I'll have to take a few and add them in.

Stock tacho is good for 11/14K rpm. There's just no markings beyond 7500. Just shift when the needle gets into the fuel gauge area.

Laptimer is more useful to me than a shift light.
