  • hi peter, what choke size are you running in the delorto's? In the long long ago, I used to drive petrol cars, 1960's alfas actually. The 2L twin cam with twin side draught webers was more torquey that the 1.8L which was 'sweeter' and revved very nicely. They both had the same jetting and same chokes. To get a similar rev range from the 2L, a larger choke could be used to help top end breathing. This could affect midrange driveability, and definitely required rejetting which is a nuisance.

    • I'm wondering about choke and carby sizing myself.

I never ran the carbs on the 1800, that was running K-Jet.

      Currently they're 32mm chokes in 40mm Dells.

I've just picked up a set of 34mm chokes to try out and see if the top end improves.

According to my Dellorto tuning book a 2.0 could use anything up to 38 mm chokes in 45s.

Biggest chokes I can put in the 40s are 36mm but the body might be too restrictive to let that work.

It also depends on what your head is capable of flowing. If your head doesn't flow, it won't make much difference. Definitely worth a try though.

        • I've got a better head here but it needs some sorting out It looks good but I don't know enough about it's history to trust it. It's got bigger valves and has been ported. It also has a big solid lifter cam of unknow spec. (but it's got huge duration.

I need to do some running about to get it checked out and change the cam followers over to a better style without the shims on top.

          • or twin 45's..... You're probably better off either sticking with what you have or shrinking the motor to suit the carbs. A 1.8L would probably benefit from 34mm chokes too, that is if you want a screamer

            • Ah, the headaches of carb tuning.
You may need a rolling road to get the most from them.
              I had a mk1 1600 with only a single downdraught. I think it was a 28/36.
I took it in to a carb specialist that had a rolling road and i tell you what! It did wonders. I gained something like 18hp just from the tune and the tuner even asked me where i wanted the power band.
The carb was initially set up for a stock motor and when i did some work to the engine, i must admit i was initially disappointed, that was until i took it in for the tune.
Carbs are incredibly sensitive, and sometimes a small change within the engine requires a retune. So going from a 1.8 to a 2.0 the engine would definitely need a proper tune.
I love what you are doing though. Mk1/twin carbs/stripped/racing track. its the way it should be. I regret never taking my old mk1 to the track.

              • Hahaha Been there, done that the Dyno tuning was 7 pages ago.

At the time they didn't play with Venturi sizes though.

                  • White's signed in for a return to Phillip Island on Sunday 16/8/09.

Regs are up on the PIARC site if you're interested.

Nothing much has changed on the car recently although I do have a new seat now. I'm a bit too big for the old one and my hips were getting bruised.

                    • Just getting ready for tomorrow.

This is the new seat all mounted up. Managed to get it even lower than the last one whilst still using the factory mounts.

This is the finished trailer too by the way.

Had a bit of a mishap with the trailer brake lever. It snapped clean off while I was setting the handbrake. It's clearly been fractured for a while. Just as well it didn't fail in service. Forunately SuperCheap had one in stock.

                      All Fixed.

Weather sounds a bit wild at the Island tomorrow. Hopefully the wind will hold the rain off.

                        • Great project, looks like it will be a heap of fun, just one thing, am I seeing things correctly in that you have your harness's crossed over each other from the harness bar through to the seat?

If so and your car is going to be tech inspected it will fail with them setup like this. Left harness through the left hole looking at the back of the seat right harness through the right hole, any other way and you will have to change it.

You can always check out the CAMS manual online for any info like this on how safety equipment has to be set up.

It's been through scrutineering 4 times now with the belts crossed like this. I can see how Schedule I could be interpreted as not allowing the crossing of the belts. I'm sure I read somewhere that crossing them avoided your shoulders popping out in a collision. It might have been in the belt manufacturers own booklet. Either way it's only a few seconds to swap them over, they've got the clip in ends.

Thanks for the heads up. I'll straighten them out to avoid any confusion trackside.
