  • NSW - VW Mechanic for engine swap

    I'm looking for a mechanic to perform a VR6 swap in my 1.8l mk3.

Now, I know of Camden GTI but they're just too far away and in an inconvenient location for me during the week but has anyone used Production Automotive out at Penrith for anything?

Also open to suggestions and recommendations.

    Cheers

You're better off buying the tools and doing it yourself in my opinion. If anything goes wrong later you'll be able to fix it and save yourself massive labour charges.

Why not put the call out to anyone on this forum to help you do the swap. There may be someone who can give you a hand and make sure it's done properly.

That way you can learn as you go and brag to your mates "I did it". You could always get Camden GTI to finish the fiddly bits like the wiring or fitting essential but weird brackets that a swap like this invariably has.

          Cheers

I think the location is irrelevant (to a point) as it wouldn't be a 1 day job.

Camden GTI makes sense as it would only be an hours drive from you. Don't forget, he has loan cars you can use. He also has a yard full of donor cars for any fiddly little items that might be needed.

As he has done it before, he'll be able to give a fairly reliable price estimate too.

But also remember that if you take it to a place such as camden gti, they take parts from wrecked/used cars. So there is no warranty on the swap so if something goes wrong it might end up costing you big $$ on labour etc

Well I plan on buying a complete/working donor car for the swap and I know that if it's running it shouldn't cost a lot.

If I had the tools to do it myself/call others to help, I totally would but I sadly, I work full time and I want it to be a "fast" swap by someone who knows what they're doing, if you catch my drift.

You could be very wrong. It's customers who want to save money.

I think that every repairer prefer to use new parts. I personally always do, even refused to fit a customer supplied secondhand parts.

Maybe he should ask first if they're willing to do that. I personally wouldn't have. Just for the warranty sake and public liability when someone would get injured on the road (or even worst) if something fell of his car.

If you ended up buying my 1.8t swap I could possibly do the install. Price would vary with what you wanted done.

Fly stu up for a weekend, pay him in sexual favours and he'd have it done for you in no time haha.

In all honesty, get your head into it and do it yourself. If you're buying a whole VR6 then it'd make it even easier to figure out how it goes together.

Because this has to be a quick swap only those who have already done it should be considered. That limits your options to just a few. Camden GTI or Canberra VW Centre in Kiama if you are going professional. If you are going private then people like Schalke or a few others (if they are willing) and even then these people have jobs so they can only do the work at nightime or on weekends.

Why do you want to convert your MK3 when it would be easier to just buy a VR6. If you are paying someone to install a VR6 motor into your car it might be just as expensive as buying a VR6.

                          Cheers

A simple install can quickly jump super high in price. Why would you have the engine out without doing all of those fiddly **** that goes wrong... Chains pumps etc. a cheap swap quickly escalates in price, it's hardly worth it when your car runs fine as is!

Should buy the VR, and slowly do all the maintenance parts on it, until you're done and then do the swap. Then you know you've got a solid base to build off.
