  • "Linda" The '93 MK1 Cabriolet

A friend of mine, Ian, purchased Linda, as he's decided to call it, off the forum last week.

Ian will take over the story once I get this out of the driveway.

My working on it is conditional on it appearing at Day of the VW in November.

Previous owner is Gary who goes by the name of Geeza around here.

I offered to help out with a quick mechanical refresh prior to the the RWC.

    This weekend we -

    Machined the discs
    Fitted new pads
Cleaned callipers and un-froze the slide pins.

    Replaced both front wheel bearings
    Replaced a stuff drive flange.

    Re bushed the gear linkages

    Replaced ball joints
Re bushed front suspension arms with urethane bushes.

Installed the new AC Delco shocks and King springs that came with the car. Front and Rear.
    Installed new strut tops.

    New oil cap
    New Fuel cap
    New spark plugs
    New coolant cap.
    replaced one exhaust hanger.

    Oil change
    Coolant change.

    Brake fluid flush.

    New tie rod ends
    New steering rack boots

    Cleaned and repacked CVs.

    Changed wheels (for the moment)

Inspected rear brakes and repacked / adjusted wheel bearings.

    Replaced a moulding clip.

    Replaced bush in accelerator pedal.
Corrected attachment of cable to accelerator pedal
    Lubed accelerator cable.
Adjusted accelerator to achieve full throttle (was only opening primary throttle.)

    Front suspension out

ALways amazing what you find when you start pulling stuff apart.

    Different sturts left to right

New wheel bearings in and backing plates cleaned up and painted.

    Cleaned up axles.

    Front arms stripped down.

One stuffed drive flange. I replaced it with a 1976 one!

Oxy cut front springs were a bit of a surprise.

Flanges pressed into cleand up hubs.

Re bushed all the gear shift linkages.

Shifting was vague to say the least, some of the bushes were missing altogether.

Refurbishe front arms. New ball joints and Super Pro Poly bushes.

Rebuilt the struts. Car came with King Springs and AC Delco shocks on the back seat.
New strut tops too of course.

Put all together looks pretty clean.

      Unusally dent free sump.

Still a bit of work to go yet obviously.

Haven't really had much a look at the electrics yet.

Motor seems to hunt at idle occasionally, need to brush up on how KE-jet works.

The wheels that came with the car are kerbed beyond repair so it's wearing a spare set of MK2 steelies for the moment.

          Needs a headlight.

          Needs a lot of detailing.

There's a few bits of body work to do too.

It's been interesting working on such a new mk1, they got quite a bit better by 1993.

I don't know what it is with GTI callipers but this is the second car where I've found both inner pads fitted to one side and both outer pads fitted to the other side.

There's a new back muffler on the way from Tooleys for this too, they still stock them for these later MK1s. Current muffler is rotten.

Those old wheels looked like BMW Schnitzers. Were they just replicas?

Some sort of replica I assume. Dealer fitted most likely. The casting says European Spoke.

Saw this one for sale and thought " thats going to go quickly"

Best thing I have done to our Cabrio was to revert the Kjet to Basic as it makes the slug that is a JH run better.

Will e mail you some other info.

                    cheers,
                    Grant
                    Lots of MK 1 Scirocco's...

If it aint a MK 1 then it must be a donor car ??

                    Cheers,
