Those red leads will get replaced before it goes back on the road, they were just what was lying about.

While the car was up in the air I discovered one of the wheels was loose. I assumed at first the wheel nuts were undone the wheel rattled around so much.

Turns out the wheel nuts are tight! Looks like I'll be replacing wheel bearings too!

Got the carby in yesterday. Took most of the day stuffing about with it.

The secondary butterfly shaft was seized so I had to tear the thing down and clean a lot of stuff up. There were a few other little issues, like a bent choke flap, that I had to sort as well.

When it came to fitting the manifold it turned out that I didn't have a full set of petrol manifold bolts so I had to cut down some diesel ones. (The bolt bar had shut by then).

Of course the DGAV Weber hit the back of the rain tray too, so I had to do a bit of panel beating to even be able to get it in there. Matters were made more complicated by this carb having an water fed auto choke hanging off the back of it.

I'll tackle the plumbing later today, there's going to be hoses all over the place!

I made up a bracket and used the ball stud off the diesel pump so that I could use the diesel throttle cable. I came up really neat, much better in fact than the factory petrol cable setup.

I honestly wouldn't worry too much about the choke Pete.

If they're tuned spot on, you shouldn't have any drama's with cold start up.

None of my old carb'd cars ever had working chokes (most of them I deleted too) & I never had a problem with them setup like this.

One - two pumps of the throttle & they'd fire up. You only had to hold the throttle for a couple of seconds to let the idle settle.

If you really feel the need, you can retro fit a electric one to these carbs, which makes it a ton more easier & waaayyy more neater than running cooling hoses all over the place if the car doesn't have the intake manifold equipped with the choke water heater.

              Great stuff as usual pete!
I feel like posting your name in the 'things that get me inspired thread'!

BTW, I've NEVER seen a South African car with good wiring. They've probably all been stolen numerous times, rebirthed, crashed, rebirthed again...

              Cheers

It lives! Fired up no problems, just required a little twist of the dizzy and off it went.

Wiring next, it's hot wired at the moment.

Any start-up smoke, Pete ? or has the valve stem seals fixed the donk ?

Bit early to tell yet, there's always a bit of smoke when you start up something like this. There's WD40 in the bores, residual diesel in the tank, diesel soot in the pipes and who knows what else.

Needs to go for a few runs before I'll really know.

Now that it's in I'll do some comp tests which will let me know more.

Starts really easily on the first turn and the water choke is operating perfectly.

Righto, got stuck into the wiring and found lots of interesting stuff.

Additional relay bases, Glow plug, rear wiper and boot unlock!

The boot unlock kit looks like a dealer option there's a a few OEM parts in the setup such as the relay base and solenoid cover.

I've got mixed emotions as I remove some of this stuff. Some of what I'm pulling out would have taken ages to put in and is actually pretty neat.

Take this for example. It took me a while to figure this out as I never had the diesel running and the electrics are all out of commission at the moment.

It would appear that someone needed a reminder to turn off the cold start.

It's a bit easier to see how it works once it's out. The toggle switch is a spring loaded momentary action type.

All that to drive this little LED

This switch was used to control the GTI driving lights I think. The grill didn't come with the car and it's going back to singles so the switch is coming out.

This switch under the dash near the driver operates the hatch release.

Mechanical brake light switch will stay.

I'm going to pop another console in, this one's got a few too many holes.

The lighter socket was just wired in parallel with the dash socket. The light was wired to the glow plug circuit.

This car even has a light in the boot!

Think I'll Leave the switch and find a nicer light to go in there.

I'm going to keep the clocks but move them into another fascia to get rid of the extra holes and fix up the red lenses over the warning lights. How's that for some mileage?

There's a number of owner improvements to this car worth mentioning.

                                Genuine Kamei door pockets!

Pop rivets cut off long used to retain shift boot in console.

                                Extended accelerator pedal.

This is stuffed now but it was a little divider to hold light items in the corner of the boot.

Seat belt hanger hooks in the rear. These look like they're out of a Kombi or something.

I'll bet there's a story behind all of these mods.
