  • Meet Ziggy - '79 GLD MK1

This is Ziggy, came to us as a wrecker but it's just too good to pull apart so I'm putting it back on the road as a weekender for a friend.

It has uncracked dash, working vent windows, South Africn HD wheels and Kamei Door pockets!

Diesel was non functional, suspected blown head.

Plan is a quick build and RWC for this one, only really needs a working motor and all the electrics sorted.

An 1800 (Ex dubai gti's cabrio) is going in instead of the Diesel.

That's the motor I put the stem seals into.

South African Heavy Duty wheels. The spare even has the original tyre on it!

The best original dash I've ever seen.

One deceased diesel and a whole bunch of dodgy wiring.

    Ziggy!

1800 being prepped. Thought I'd better put a belt guard on it as it's up for a RWC, this is a 1600 one.

Engine bay upon removal of diesel

    Old diesel.

    Gearbox before.

    Gearbox after.

There was quite a few fatigue cracks in the front valance needing repair, I welded them all up today after pulling the motor out.

This is one way to block off the unneeded water galley when changing the inlet manifold to a TS passat one. It's an M10 bolt tapped and loctited into the gallery. Sure a plug would be neater but this is easy to get out if I have to.

Weekends are never boring at my house !

I would have gotten the motor in today but I had a snapped exhaust stud put up a fight and a couple of other delays. In the end I had to oxy a nut to the remaining stub and use a rattle gun to get it out.

Yeah, I was going to ask you if you wanted any of the diesel stuff out of this. Everything except the head and block should be OK. Even the glow plug fuse box is intact and has it's cover. There's also 1/2 tank of diesel I need a new home for

                              Popped the motor in yesterday.

Needed a new rear gearbox mount. Diesel has made the old one soft.

Nothing remarkable with the fit up. This car actually had all the factory heatshields and brackets still on the downpipe.

Exhaust is all hooked up. Need to clean up a DGV weber and pop it on during the week. Need to flush the last of the diesel out of the system too.

Did all the gearshift linkages while I had all motor out.

Had to replace a torn CV boot too.
