They'll only do it as part of an upgrade as far as I know. I have not done one myself as they insist on having the ECU.

It makes sense to have it chipped at the same time really, who wants a std engine when you go to the trouble of dropping it in a different car?

Do you have an engine sorted out or are you still looking?

Anyone done this in a mk2? is it easier to do in a mk2 because of the subframe and stuff?

I don't know, but I imagine it wouldn't be any easier into a mk2. Could be argued that the subframe gets in the way/hassle.

When my motor(1.8 20vT) arrives it won't be going into my mk2

Unfortunately the motor I am sourcing has an auto box....can I bolt a mk3 gti(hydraulic clutch/cable change) g/box to it? Eg. the box loon has for sale? And will it physically fit, given I have a flywheel etc.

Gav, do you know if the ecu has much to do with the gearbox in mk4 Gti's? So for example if I swap out the auto for a manual will it not run due to other immobilizer/ecu issues?

There are literally hundreds of Mk2 20vTs!!

Motor bolts straight in - you can even buy a QPENG loom for a Mk2 like TassieGTi did for his Mk1 swap

Where is the motor coming from? Not heard of an auto 20Vt except the tiptronic ones in Passats.

Can you get the part number off the ECU and I'll do some digging. Someone with access to the wiring diagrams would be useful right now to know for sure.

I reckon they could be compleetly seperate, the gearbox ecu can get it's info on throttle position and speed of opening from a pot on the pedal.

I would think the box would be ok but you'll need a flywheel and clutch obviously.

ecstuning were doing a deal to get rid of the dual mass flywheel which was reasonable money.

Ok the front cut has arrived, what do I need to keep? as a bare minimum for the factory ecu to work?

Can I get rid of the header tank and sender?

There's cruise control which looks very after market and I've started removing.

There seems to be one fuse box on drivers side on the right end of where the dash would be, then the main relay box under the dash drivers side, but there seems to be a weird looking relay type box vertically on each side of the car???

Which relays do I need and which can I turf? And are there any quirks? like dissconnect the windscreen wipers or the ABS pump and the ecu won't work???

The A/C compressor is gone and there seems to be a wire for that.
The Power Steering pump is also gone.

there seem to be a few canisters up the front to do with the fuel system.....

wiring that goes along side the ignition to the steering wheel, assuming I can weed it all out and dissconnect it?

mate whats it going into vortex has covered this millions of time,

                    whats the engine code
                    ?
from my research the block uses the mk2 mounts however the transverse engine needs a new manifold or a manifold off a longtitudal engine, furtell autowerks sell stuff for this swap to make it easier u just gotta be carefull over bumps cos the engine sits lower.

Matt said to keep all the wiring etc and then thats the hardest part of the swap, unless u wanna wire up megasquirt (pain in the ass) or some others, thats up to you

oh and piss off the AC i no its hot in summer but gives u more room and i think from mem u need parts of a 16v mk2 or off a mk3 but vortex covers it all

You can use the Mk3 cableshift gearbox like I have, but will need a flywheel, same as VR6 and an ABF or VR6 clucth.

I just scored an AEB 20vT engine, which still has the boltholes for the side engine mount, it will bolt up into a Mk1 and I`ll probably use aftermarket computer.

Just a heads-up: the VR6 flywheel isn't the same - you can only use a 4cyl 228mm one as the bolt patterns are different

You can use the clutch but the flywheel is different.

Not sure you would want to know If you want to do it justice, it will cost far more than you could ever imagine
