Mk1 GTI brake conversion

Hello everyone,

whats required for the Mk1 GTI brake conversion??? All the bits are going onto a Mk1 Diesel that has the squareish pads and thin discs. Dunno about caliper bolt spacing.

For the GTI conversion, I've heard mention of hubs, discs and pads being different but the caliper being the same as the petrol golf. Is this correct?

Also, where can I buy the GTI discs? Are they available new in australia?
Where can i get the hubs? What model petrol golf has the right calipers?

Or am I better off going to pickapart and grabbing bits off a camira/commonhore? Has anyone done the Camira conversion? It appeals as the camira discs are 4x100.

Also, what the hell is a G60?

If you are gonna change to GTI setup, you need the hub assy, different calipers, rotors, and bottom balljoints and wishbones.

Camira setup is ok, as you can kep your hubs and get all the bits easily and cheaply, but you will need to modify or shim some parts, which may not be 100% legal, although who is gonna check that on an old Mk1?

I havn't had to change hubs ball joints and wish bones. I previously had GTI brakes on my petrol 76er & have recently installed them on my 79 Diesel.

I used a complete GTI set up ie, discs & calipers [and pads], and took the standard discs and calipers off and put the GTI caliper and disc straight on. didn't need to change hubs or ball joints...

How does the caliper fit onto the early hub mate? The mounting holes are different.

Sounds like your diesel already had later brakes on with a solid rotor, which you can change to vented ones with different calipers.

I dont believe you can swop from standard early mk1 brakes to GTI ones and retain the original hubs.

Watch those poxy little bleed nipples, I have lost count of the number of those I have snapped off in my time. All rusted in solid.

I got into the habit of heating and allowing them to cool a few times before attempting to undo with a socket not a spanner.

Had a look at all the brake setups at the shop today. and it would appear that Jarrad is right!!!!!!!!!

The original Mk1 hubs have the correct bolt hole spacing for a Mk2 caliper and rotor.

We all learn something new every day.

I have 2 rotors and one caliper, for anyone looking for a set. And 2 hubs if anyone needs.

Mk 2 GTI calipers fit straight on as well? I didn't know that. I assume then that mk 2 hubs must be the same, or very similar to late mk 1 hubs. [the difference on the mk 1 hubs being the smaller ball joints on earlier models]

Mk2 has a completely different hub setup, These can be removed and replaced with Mk3 hubs and brakes.

Mk2 hubs do not fit a Mk1 as the offset and camber is different.

However, Mk1 GTI calipers and rotors are the same as Mk2, so that is the source for them in Oz.

I got filthy pulling out untold hubs and measuring stuff for you lot, I hope you are all grateful

I've heard mention of Mk1 GTI calipers being the same as certain Mk1 petrol calipers, the difference in disc thickness being accommodated by thinner pads. What Mk1's had the same calipers as the GTI's? I need a driver side caliper to complete my vented brake upgrade.

I have the same caliper as Jarrads, well a passenger side one anyway. Does anyone know where i could get a driver side caliper? Are these fitted to any other european cars? The caliper is are made by ATE. Also, where to get pads???
