  • G60 Brakes

Hi all, I have red a bit of info on here regarding the G60 brake upgrade for MkI golfs, with I believe 280mm discs, but am new to the vw stuff...

    1) what actually is the G60?
    2) are they actually bolt straight up, or just very easy to swap
    3) I have also red about 305mm(?) upgrade, what car are they off, vented? and straight swap? or just easy to swap?
    4) what size wheels are required for the larger 300ish mm discs?

I currently have 15in rims, and from what i have red, they fit the 280mm discs... I will also be upgrading the brake lines and the res/master cylinder etc...

Also, is there many drum - disc conversions around and/or is it easy to do? (for the rears)

    Cheers...

Most of that info would be for the Mk2 mate. Thats much easier as it shares more parts with the Mk3.

Easiest Mk1 brake upgrade is a set of GTI Vented Discs, you also need to swop the calipers and hub for GTI items.

this will be sufficient for all but the most extreme engined Mk1.

Rears are easy. I`d use Mk3 CL Drums (Seat Cordoba). You can use Mk3 Discs but the handbrake cables are the problem.

    Hope that helps.

hmmm, ok thanx for that info...The way i understood is that MkI's do that upgrade too...

how hard is it generally to change hubs over?, what size discs are those GTI ones? and what probs do you have with the handbrake cables?

If it helps, i have basicly any tool i need as i am an apprentice mechanic, so have hoists etc as well...

      Cheers...

I have a mate in the UK with a Turbo Technics MK1. He still has 239mm discs on the front. That is a 175hp, you just need to push hard.

A mk2 booster and G60 mk2 280mm brakes would be over the top for most mk1s as Matt has commented.

If you fit bigger brakes and wheels to suit, you will make the dynamics of the car suffer.

Having run lots of MK1s, 2s and 3s they work best as VW intended for wheel size. A std MK1 GTI on 13s is a really sweet thing to drive.

TO install 280mm discs on a mk1 you would need an adaptor plate where as it is a straight bolt on job for a mk2/3.
There are a few available from O/S suppliers, the best is momentum motor parts based in Canada
If you are going to do level of work you would be better off with a Girling 60 carrier & caliper twin piston set up, which is different altogether than G60 single piston (G60 was actually a super charger that VW used back in the 1980's)which are actually Lucas 54 calipers
The girling 60s will also require a 24-5mm master cylinder & the lucas 54 would need a 22mm master cylinder, but most of all they would need to be passed by an engineer

I can personally say with 79 GLD hub's & GTI caliper's with a custom built adapter plate, which I had made, they bolt straight up as long as you have 15" minimum!

Yes they maybe overkill! But with sticky tyres, they bloody awesome!

I'm not sure the 280mm disc's upgrade even are a bolt on fit in the mk2's. I think you may also need the g60 280mm disc hub's too! Which would be pretty scarce I'd imagine

            My current setup is

            GTI caliper's, adapter plate's & 280mm corrado front disc's.

Mk3 rear disc conversion & mk1 scirocco handbrake cables

Mk2 16V 22mm master cyl. & booster assembly with 16V scirocco proportioning valves to suit rear disc.

            Braided brake hose throughout.

I had the same component's on my mk1 GTI except it had the standard 239mm vented disc's on the front & on race rubber it could pull up from approx. 170kp/h in under 60m to take a hairpin on a race track without lockup.

That's using all new OEM disc's & pad's. No fancy brake pad's. Just standard replacement equipment without any hint of fade.

You can use any hubs that take 256mm discs as standard, That would include lots of cars available in Australia. Just need to buy G60 Caliper brackets. The discs are slightly thicker at 22mm so std 256 pads are a bit too thick to go in. G60 calipers are just a little wider.
