  • Mk 1 Diesel Project

Figure I'd start my own thread, so I can add pics, ask questions and show you guys what I'm up too and what I'm doing.

    The plan:
Havn't got any long term plan. First off is just go over the car and neaten everything up, get rid of the rust and make it look decent. Pretty major service is on the list too.

Making it look decent atm includes a respray and chrome bumpers. The rest I'll figure out as I go along.

I'm planing on spraying at the end of Jan, and hopefully roadied and reg'd by late feb/march. I'm leaving myself a bit more time to both prep and spray this time, hopefully for the benefit of the end product.

I'll also whack my GTI brakes and exhaust off my old car, aswell as a few other bits and bobs I've got laying around.

Then I'll daily it, putt around and fix other stuff as I go. Plenty of crusing too! Might play around with bio diesel once it's up and going too.

    Car details:
79 GLD 4 door. 1.5 Diesel & 4 speed. ~180,000 kms showing on the speedo. Been off the road for about 1 year. body is reasonably straight, no major dings/prangs. Plenty of rust spots here and there, nothing too major. Luckily clean floors and A pillars! Interior is in decent nicks. Seats are good, carpets faded and worn, dash cracked, but has a dash mat.

    on with the pics!

It's not much to look at at the moment, but give it time

And todays work, checking the floors and tidying/cleaning the interior.

Welcome to the up hill battle.

The tailgate has been "repaired" previously, and was covered in bog! It'll take alot of work to get straight.

I lifted one of the quarter flares, discovered a dint and some rust, then kept the flapper disc going, and well, the whole rear LHS quarter has been bogged! No obvious signs of significant impact, but it's plenty rough, and will take alot of work to straighten, and eventual rebogging There's still more that I havn't uncovered, I got a bit depressed about it, so I stopped that for a while and decided to have lunch.

      Pics:
Tail gate. Bog was removed with flapper, and primered. Now i've just taken to it with a file to show the high spots. which there are plenty of!

rear qtr. Doesn't show the damage much, but all that was bogged. I reckon most of the C pillar will be bogged too. grrr....

Nah, you wouldn't want it, it's pretty rubbishy.

James, just give me a buzz sometime if you wanna get ya hands dirty. Just not tomorrow or thurs, I'm away for new years.

I'm hoping that Stu will have some spare time soon, so he can drop by and weld up a few things for me

Wouldn`t you just use a better tailgate and save your energy on that one?

If its bogged nicely on the quarter and not rusty, I`d leave well alone and blend your bog into whats there.

              Looks alright tho.

Yea, well the only reason I started hacking into the bog was cause there was a bit of rust there, also a few bog cracks. I ain't trying to make this car perfect, so I think I'll just blend in with the old bog. Should be alot easier in the long run. hopefully.

I gave the tailgate a once over and pulled a few dents. A few holes to be welded up and a bit of crafty welding, + thin bog layer should get it pretty straight. We'll see how it goes & what stu can do on it.
